• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Plenty of conger in the wrecks off Plymouth. I used to cut them into steaks, then the wife would steam them in a bowl, with chilli, ginger, spring onion, coriander, soy sauce. I wish I’d filmed the time someone let loose a bloody great conger on the deck. Comedy gold - everyone legging it, then...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

Do they not want the first new motor back? If not, maybe strip it down on a rainy evening to see what happened. Otherwise, with various destructive tools, you can chop out the windings - makes a few quid more than a whole motor.

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

I make the minimum 23.75 uF, so it is under, but still, not grossly out of whack. As far as I can see, the low value would reduce aux winding current, and overall torque, making the motor ‘work harder’. It may be the main winding that burnt out as a result, because the aux one was no longer...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

Reasonably consistent is about all we’re looking for. Nothing grossly abnormal except for the old aux winding. I would question your 0.4 ohm meter short reading, and be tempted to measure again, but probably not worth it. In the picture, you have the meter on ohms, not capacitance. Click it...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

Cap is good. Hook in the standard probes, if you have them, the same way you’ve done the crocs, and set to this one: With both motor plugs unplugged: 1. Short the meter probes together and note the reading. 2. Measure between the two mains terminals of the motor. 3. Measure between the two...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

As expected for an electrically healthy motor, then. It’s a basic test so doesn’t rule out electrical problems, but does tend to point us to a mechanical issue.

It’s John Dory - I assumed the ‘John’ was optional, as in Jenny Wren.

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

On the electrical side, if the circuit is as below, which is likely, you could conceivably measure each winding separately. The two white plugs are shown here in red: Unplug the cap and mains connections. Main: measure between L and N. Aux: find the cap connection that’s a dead short to one...

Some sort of marinade, then grill over coals, sounds like a good idea, thanks. I’ll need one of those mesh cages to hold the fish. The chap has just brought round another ten Dorys, so it was ‘Dory and chips’ last night. Very nice. They’re quite easy to fillet. No bones. I’m the only one...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

Looks fine for the price. Uni-T are said to make some reasonable budget models. I’d probably swap those cheapie batteries out for some decent ones. Main caveat would be the CAT rating, if you plan to do any mains voltage measurements. https://www.tequipment.net/cat-ratings-explained/

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

Very good. I’d be tempted to get that new cap tested, in the meantime, or even just get another one. The motor would have been gulping current, running slow like that, and might have damaged it. Just a thought. Or… get a multimeter (with capacitance test function). They’re so handy around the...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

It’s a PSC motor - no centrifugal switch, by the look of it. There’s only one winding burnt on the old one. I’d be itching to get the meter on it, to see if it’s the auxiliary or main winding. Ditto the old cap. Don’t throw them away, in case you meet a friendly passing electrician/engineer. It...

Salting the ling sounds a good idea. I recently cut up some whisky barrel staves for firewood, and kept the sawdust, so perhaps it could be smoked and used in Cullen skink. I agree about pollack and coalfish (saithe). Fun to catch, boring to eat. I’m quite fond of the old ling, having enjoyed...

What would you do with a ling? As I say, the skin is hard to crisp up, so best removed, then cook like cod/haddock? @Tiresias the Cha ca ling went down very well last night. No peanuts, except bird ones, so we used toasted pine nuts instead. We had all the other ingredients, since, as you can...

Taste, texture or just the thought of it? If it’s just squeamishness, and you can get over it, it’s hard to beat fresh oysters with a few drips of tabasco and lemon juice.

Fitting windows into a shiplap wall

Yes, if that’s best. I’ll just have to size the frame to fit between the flat areas of shiplap.

Fitting windows into a shiplap wall

I’d have to cut the opening to avoid the wrong part of the shiplap, leaving a gap under the trim? That should be ok, as I can custom-size the windows, although I’ve already got the glass, which I think is greenhouse glass.

Good ones up here too - I usually cut the tough bit off the white, season, then just a minute per side in very hot butter. Roll the roes around in the pan afterwards. So you’re gently steaming it, basically? The fresher, the better, I suppose. @Phil Pascoe I’ve ordered both those books, cheers.
