• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    A Federal style demilune table

The legs on the originals were pretty spindly. I have a few of these knocking around. Here’s two. One is Georgian, one a Victorian copy of a Georgian original. Both fold back tops, so the rear legs are hinged to provide support. Wooden box hinges. The legs are pretty consistent 42mm...

    Fish Dishes?

Seeaal is what I have seen. Dialectical, perhaps? I've just looked it up. It is the same as Dornhai. Spiny dogfish (or in some dictionaries only the upper fillets) And also used for conger it seems. As is Meeraal. There was a chap, an English diplomat I think, who wrote a book on the fish...

    Fish Dishes?

In Germany and the Low Countries they are known as what translates to sea eel. Which they ain’t. Possibly a slight excuse?

    Blood (without the gore!)

Yes, you are right, the efficacy of chloroquine and its derivatives has been declining, and is under review. But it is still recommended in some areas and for some individuals. I believe Trump actually said he was taking hydroxychloroquine, an associated drug. Still bollox though. My last...

    Blood (without the gore!)

But the point is they have suffered a net loss in blood contributions. Without the professor telling you that you have to donate, the level fell back to what you might expect from students. Practically zip. I must admit that I feel a bit morally ambivalent about paid for blood from the States...

    Blood (without the gore!)

Hmm, I can’t remember whether I have told this story before. I can’t give blood – medication and probably about 40% proof – but my partner uses quite a lot, not for vampiric reasons, but to feed the mossies (malaria research). There was a deal with the blood people, that if the students, docs...

    Fish Dishes?

Dog fish is rock Salmon or huss I think. It's a small shark. Unusual in chippers in Scotland. It probably doesn't have any bones, because sharks don't. Needs to be really fresh though. I think you were banned from fishing for them for a bit.

What would you do? It’s not wood.

You seemed to have handled it as well as could be done. But you do this for pleasure? Aggressive drunks are difficult at the best of times (a couple of decades of hosting corporate hostility has taught me that – mostly bankers, lawyers and accountants. You’d think they’d know better). Couple...

    Fish Dishes?

Well, I’m on a stint in Brussels again. And as usual a lot of hanging around. So, I thought I’d contribute to this. Adrian has covered it pretty comprehensively. So, other than disagreeing with him on pollack (perfectly acceptable in curries, and other made dishes), I will drivel on regardless...

    Pay to read?

I’m not sure I agree Mark. Things should be represented as they are. But I’m quite open to be convinced that my way is not the only way. More vignette from my working life: L and T (one of my departments) is generally female. At one point my employees were the only reason we hit our diversity...

    Pay to read?

Adrian, you are going to have to stop talking sense, or someone will ban you. Yeah, the Telegraph has gone revoltingly down market. But I’ve got used to the crossword setters. And what you say about the BBC is true. Slow but generally reliable. But then I don’t have any televisions. (watch...

    Holiday Toolchest

I’m not entirely sure that they’ll look that closely. Reminds me of when we first moved to Sweden. Defender packed to the gills. Including small dachshund making a noise. Young custom guard did a pretty cursory look. And then asked ‘Any sharp, or edged items’. My response: ‘Oh, good lord no’...

We are nothing if not consistent up here

Hard frost halfway up a hill in the Scottish Borders. End of growing season. Yield – 16 broad beans (not pods, individual beans. We gave them names). About a dozen courgettes. Rhubarb. Plums/bullaces. More apples than you can shake a stick at. Two morello cherries. Enough black and red...

    Wales 20mph speed limit

We’ve had the 20 mph for a while in the ‘burgh and Scottish Borders. They were thinking of a blanket one 2025, but survival for the SNP is probably more pressing for them than forcing that through. My own observations: In Edinburgh it has made no difference whatsoever. Every one still travels...

    Morning Sky

I can offer these two from the Borders. Again, no light polution. Sunsets rather than sunrises.

    Bayesian

Sam. I think we’re making the same points. Fashions change in statistical analysis; Bayesian stuff needs a shed load of computing power; we have a lot more computing power than ever could have been imagined in the late 70s. My father’s data set for his PhD was essentially every one that had...

    Bayesian

Christ. The programmes my father used to run for his magnum opus were run all the way through the night. In Edinburgh University in the late 70s or at the APRE. I’d have to ask who paid for it – either the University or the MoD. I do know he did get asked why he needed so much computing time...

    Bayesian

My partner uses it in malaria research. And my father used it in his PhD thesis (a real page turner) many moons ago. It’s been in and out of fashion. There have been attempts to use it in expert systems for property valuation, but as far as I know it has come to naught.

    Dynamic pricing

Was there ever a golden age? Although I do remember travelling in the last days of BOAC (Scotland-Zambia), and being taken up to see the pilot in the cabin, who I think I remember had to sign your Junior Jet Club book. We discussed this at dinner last night. Absolutely worst airport in the...

    Dynamic pricing

Can I add Edinburgh airport to the list of places that qualify as one of the circles of hell. They have been ‘upgrading’ it for the last 30 years. And it’s still rubbish. Mind you, why would you want to fly? As Uncle Matthew said: ‘abroad is unutterably bloody, and all foreigners are fiends’...
