• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Workshop roof design

I'll let those who know what they're about say whether this is a good idea, but there's another approach to it here - the insulated panels span from a ridge beam straight to the wall plate, and have the insulation stripped back by 150mm at the bottom so that just the top steel box section...

    Etherial smart meter??

If that was any time after 2012, then that replacement is a smart meter. The electricity companies haven't been fitting anything else for a very long time.

    Not so new posts

I suspect the problem is hiding just here:

    Faceless facebook

To be honest it's just as likely that it was a human, but that human isn't allowed to apply any sort of common sense in interpreting the policy. It just says "sporting event tickets" aren't allowed, and says nothing about whether the event is in the future or the past, and they're only allowed...

    Essential kitchen tools - 2024

That French setup is pretty close to what we have here in Cambridge - all plastic food packaging, including stuff which is labelled as not recyclable, goes in the blue wheelie bin for recycling. The main difference is that we can put glass in there as well. They've put a lot of effort into...

    Bread; makers, people or mechanical?

Another thing that's come out of recent research but doesn't seem to be widely publicised - perhaps because it threatens a large and profitable industry sector - is that 'alternative' zero-calorie sweeteners trigger the same insulin response as actual sugar and are just as bad for insulin...

    Essential kitchen tools - 2024

Yes, technically it only applies in the EU, but why would the manufacturers bother running a separate production line just for the UK when the new EU ones are also legal here? Things like milk bottles have very different designs here so there's no commercial benefit to adapting them (yet), and...

    Essential kitchen tools - 2024

I assume he's referring to these: It's a relatively recent regulation that plastic bottle caps be attached to the bottles, AIUI to prevent them from getting loose and choking wildlife to death.

    Bread; makers, people or mechanical?

If you've got a powerful enough stand mixer, I've never seen the point in another machine. Put the ingredients in the bowl, run the mixer for 5-10 minutes depending on recipe, turn it off, leave the dough in the mixer bowl to prove, transfer to tins or baking sheet and shape up in the process...

    USB charging

Yes, but it doesn't really matter in practice. Any USB charger will be able to supply the baseline 5V output with some amount of current. Some chargers can supply higher voltages, but will only do so if the thing being charged asks it to. The thing you're charging will have a set of voltage...

    Kity 419 table saw.

If you're ever going to run a table saw without a riving knife, then cross-grain non-through cuts are what you'd want to be doing. No offcut to catch the blade, and no chance of a crosscut closing up the kerf due to internal tensions. Normally I'd never run without it, but if you can't fit it in...

    parking charge

If you were on a public highway, then no private company can fine you, only the local authority. If you were on private land, then parking charges are a matter of contract. They make an offer by clearly advertising terms and conditions on signs, which you accept by parking on their land. That...

    Evri racing

The sad reality these days is that all the delivery companies are essentially the same, and the level of service you get from any of them is completely dependent on the individual courier(s) that run your local route. The old-fashioned idea of consistent brand service standards has gone out of...

    Evri racing

I've found the trick to be sitting in the front room so that you can see the car pull up and get to the door before they have a chance to ring the doorbell. Unfortunately this is not conducive to getting anything else done that day.

What data cable to run next to power cable to garage?

Armoured cable is only needed if you're going to be burying it bare, and even then it's questionable whether it's really necessary for data; inside a duct you'll be fine with normal stuff as long as it's waterproof. For clipping to a wall outdoors the only additional requirement is that the...

    Ultra-processed food ?

Most British Indian restaurants are owned and run by Bangladeshis, but the classic 'British Indian' menu owes more to the Delhi area and its mix of cultures and cuisines, with occasional additions from other major colonial cities, all filtered through a lens of British expectations and...

    New Forum bugs/feature requests/dislikes etc

That sounds like the 10,000 character limit is something that phpBB didn't enforce but the new software does, so that the post got migrated across without a problem but then can't be edited without reducing it to fit under the new limit. Apparently that limit is configurable in the admin panel...

Stanley "Bedrock" 607 with Pinnacle/IBC blade and chipbreaker

The "No 607" cast into the body would suggest an actual Bedrock - do the flat-topped sides vary by date or country of manufacture?

    Tisedfing online "shop".

A couple of pieces of information from the domain registration data: the domain was registered six days ago, using a Hong Kong-based registrar. The 'Registrant Country' field lists Cuba, and the 'Registrant State/Province' is 'sfwaf'. In addition, the 'About Us' page on the website describes...

    Power sockets with USB outlets

Big Clive took one of the cheap ones apart a while back, which gives plenty of reason to go for the better branded stuff. I have a few of them around the house in places where adding another socket to take a plug-in charger wasn't practical, all MK Logic Plus, and haven't had any problems with...
