• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Yonks ago, we had one of those appalling MK1 smart meter jobbies which I very soon hoiked out and kicked into the long grass, mentioning to 'er indoors that we weren't going to have another one of those bloody things. We were with suppliers various over the next few years and are currently with Octopus. SWIMBO keeps a very beady eye on our 'leccy consumption and was looking at her iPhone at the weekend and noticed that we had readings that corresponded almost exactly with the ones I take every couple of weeks. It transpires that the readings on her 'phone are from a smart meter.

The only problem is, we haven't got a physical smart meter!

She was confuzzled as was I so I said to "ping them a message" which she did; when the reply came back it appears there is a smart meter on our account floating about in the ether which we knew nowt about. They didn't tell us about it and we didn't request it...so what's going on? - Rob

Your post lacks critical information.

SWIMBO keeps a very beady eye on our 'leccy consumption and was looking at her iPhone at the weekend So what/where is she viewing the data ? Does she log on to Octopus website and look at your account ? If she reads data from off Octopus and it's increasing each week then you have a smart meter. There is no other way that they have of tracking your consumption.

almost exactly with the ones I take every couple of weeks. Are these readings taken from your actual meter ?

When they took out your MK1 meter, what meter did they put in its place ? Can you take a photo of it ? Interested in model number details (not your serial number or anything that can identify you/your account).

Sounds as if they simply replaced with a smart meter clandestinely with another one but didn't give you the digital read out for inhouse use.

Roger, I take the readings from the 'lecy meter in the house and I removed the original crappy MK 1 meter years ago, as mentioned above. It wasn't, nor has it ever been replaced with another physical Smart Meter at any time. We don't posses a physical bit of kit that you can hold in yer mitts - Rob

Edit - in the intervening years, the original old brown Bakelite 'lecy meter which must have been decades old was replaced with a modern digital LED readout thingie which may be able to communicate with a supplier. I guess that might be where the readings that SWIMBO can see on her iPhone originate??

If that was any time after 2012, then that replacement is a smart meter. The electricity companies haven't been fitting anything else for a very long time.

You can still ask them to fit a normal meter.

My understanding is that you can no longer have a conventional normal/dumb meter. They are no longer made and refurbished ones are on the resale market only. You can opt to have smart meter fitted which is then programmed to behave like a dumb meter so that you have to submit readings.
However this programming is done remotely over the network so your dumbed down meter is still on the network and will still have a remotely commandable cut off switch and I'm 99% confident that the supplier can still remotely read your meter.

Rob, I would be extremely surprised if you removed your smart meter. you may well have discarded the in home display but the smart meter - almost certainly and older type SMETS1 standard meter will still be present and "phoning home" your meter readings possibly every 1/2hr.

Ahah...OutfoxTheMarket were lying then.

How can that possibly happen Bob? This was an ex-meter once I'd removed it, having shuffled off this mortal coil. It was bereft of life and gone to meet it's maker and the only reason it was easy to remove is that it wasn't nailed to it's shelf. It's now residing quietly at the bottom of local land tip :ROFLMAO: - Rob

Edit - don't tell me it's all about the plumage! :ROFLMAO:

Are you confusing the actual meter with an accessory readout gizmo Rob. As far as I know a meter is connected directly into the incoming mains and you aren't allowed to tamper with it let alone remove it which would be extremely dangerous.

EDIT OOPs Bob has already said that.

LOL...knowing Rob the thought of him getting pliers out and screwdrivers, physically removing and replacing his meter.....nah! Making superb cabinetry ...yeah.....but leccy ? Nah
