• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

No! I will not Sign off on it.

That is a fair point. But compulsory RCD protection goes a long way to mitigate that. What you could do is insist that, if there is a bathroom socket, that the taps/drain be non-earthed, simply confirmed with a wander lead during a normal EICR. Even with a socket 3m away, this could be defeated...

No! I will not Sign off on it.

I’ve never quite understood our aversion to bathroom sockets. Arguments against them could be applied equally to kitchen or outside ones, or negated because they are allowed 3m from bath/shower edge anyway. If they’re safe (even required) in France, then why not here? Do the French have a higher...

Development of the Wadkin RB Surface Planer.

Are you still about @Vann? I found this. Not sure if it’s an RB. Seems to have a rack for advancing the fence.

Any nice people with a Mill?

Ooh! I’ll have a Bridgeport, please.;) I’d second the advice to ask on the MIG welding forum. Lots of serious machine lads there. It would be a stretch for my Tom Senior. They would need a bit more detail, maybe some pics with a scale to get an idea of dimensions, and some of the undersides of...

I suspect he overpaid for it, and doesn’t want to take the hit. I can certainly take or leave this one!

Well, I stuck to my guns on £300 delivered but he’s not having it. When I said the motor* might be burnt out, essentially scrapping the machine, he didn’t defend it, suggesting he hasn’t tested it, or knows it’s burnt out. * 8-pole, 3hp, probably custom/obsolete face mount. As close to...

Yes, it would be a functional restoration. It would sit just under an overhanging roof bit and take on deeper ripping jobs that the 18S5 couldn’t handle. Main concern is, that motor looks to be direct drive, so harder to repower if burnt out. There may be scope for leaving it in place, running...

Yes, I was thinking, at £300, if I timed the scrapyard run right, separated copper/heavy/light etc, I could probably get £150 scrap value, so only dropping £150 if it turned out to be a dog. It’s only about 6 miles away. I’ve told him my trailer won’t take it. If he offers to drop it round for...

😲 Bugger me. I’m going to need a bigger trailer.

Cheers. Should do me for now. In other news, I’ve made an offer on this one, that @Trevanion suggested: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2033642633742014 Would anyone hazard a guess at how heavy it is? I’m not entirely sure my trailer will take it. 300-400kg?

Ok for my first bandsaw, hopefully. I’ve always had an aversion to them, having only used little tinny benchtop ones, where the blade just wanders everywhere, including diagonally through the workpiece once.

Thanks all, and cheers Tom for the picture guide! My choices are unfortunately limited by what’s near me, or available by pallet. Very few sellers will palletise, and some get quite snotty about my even asking. So, a bit of a lukewarm response for the Startrite. Noted, especially the...

Yes, I’m a bit wary of machines missing important bits, unless very cheap. Can be a false economy. Got my eye on a Startrite 18-s-5 (with fence!). Any good?

Pros: nice and big. Fairly near me. Cons: No fence (quite commonly missing, for some reason). Few sellers are willing to strap to a pallet...

    Omelette theory

I had a go at one - very nice, and quite fun to make. I cheated and used a silicone spatula. Also, no dashi, so substituted with soy sauce and MSG. What I made wasn’t particularly regular in section, but rolling it up in foil to rest seemed to correct that. Will order it next time I go to a...

    Fixing a stripped thread

^^ Good technique. The other way is, with the tap in the chuck, turn the drill on, then off, and plunge the tap in as it slows to a stop. Then release and continue by hand. Quick and simple, but probably not the best way with a tiny tap, say under M5. It’s how I started all my tapping before I...

Yes, except they tend ‘guard’ you against ALL threats, real or imagined, including your own self entering the garden, or looking out of the window.

    Omelette theory

I DO like egg cooking! Will try it. That tip about cracking eggs on a flat surface, to avoid bits of shell and breaking the yolk, also seems to work.

I like Jacques Pepin’s style - no shouting or overdramatisation, just the almost casual skill of the expert. The browning makes a nice flavour, but heating the albumin to that temp toughens it, apparently. That does seem to be the case when you compare the two styles. One way round that is to...
