• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Help with Identification of a Board - Maybe Elm?

Hi all. The pics show a rough sawn board which surfaced while cleaning out the timber storage area - from right in a at the back. It's been in there for about 30 years. I have no recollection whatsoever as to what it might be. I'd appreciate some help with identification of the species. It's...

    MS Outlook replacement

Another here that's had it with Outlook, Windows and Microsoft in general. Ditto with ever more heavily Googleised Android on mobile phones. This having previously given up on Apple as a consequence of a computer having been rendered obsolete by an OS update after three years. Thinking of Linux...

    Anyone seen lead do this?

Another variable is the possibility of adulterated lead. Can't remember the details but I tripped over material perhaps ten years ago which suggested that there was a widespread problem with lead sold for roofing not being pure. That it was prone to cracking up due to expansion and contraction...

    Stuck grub screws

It's quite likely the time in a barn in the cold led to condensation which played a big part in enabling the corrosion. The Incra plate seems to hold up fine in lightly heated conditions. Stainless screws might sound appealing and would themselves hold up but would likely worsen any electrolytic...

Source for a PCB/Speed Control for a 240V De Walt DW 625 GB Type 4 Router?

Thanks again Eric. Events so far suggest it's just as well that the PCB will likely not be needed. Will proceed accordingly when the other bits arrive...

    COMPASS PLANES

Fine Woodworking ran a detail piece by a US woodworker on setting up a compass plane some years ago - in that case a Kunz. The advice was basically very similar to setting up a normal plane - sort the mouth out, carefully flatten the sheet metal base approaching and around the mouth and fit a...

    Stuck grub screws

MDF tables seem inclined to sag - but ply is often far from being flat. I have an an MDF (?) Incra router table which is the better part of 50mm thick and laminate covered on both sides. Despite the thickness, rigid support around the perimeter and its living in a warm and dry workshop it still...

Using a Track Saw for Rip Cuts Instead of a Table Saw?

I did that in the early 90s Roger, but not now given the state of my well worn back and knees. :) Anything much below chest height means pain before very long. Doing it on the floor still needs space...

Source for a PCB/Speed Control for a 240V De Walt DW 625 GB Type 4 Router?

Thank you for the various steers Eric, much appreciated. I called Miles and various other UK parts outfits but they all as our local service agent confirmed that the PCB is no longer available. Likewise in Holland and Germany. Will take a look at the Trend and CMT options. I've for good or...

Using a Track Saw for Rip Cuts Instead of a Table Saw?

Space availability vs. sheet size seems unfortunately to be the deciding factor, after that it's down to what works in your particular situation. Most will be well aware of this but storage, handling and the loading of a panel saw are with large sheets significant tasks that need a lot of room...

Source for a PCB/Speed Control for a 240V De Walt DW 625 GB Type 4 Router?

Thanks for that Pete. The interesting question is whether or not problems with the speed control and/or magnet can cause the squealing noise. Web reports tend to suggest that when the speed control PCB fails the router either won't run or ends up stuck at full speed - not what I'm seeing...

Source for a PCB/Speed Control for a 240V De Walt DW 625 GB Type 4 Router?

Hi all. The part number for the 240V PCB/speed control for the type 4 DW 625 GB is 868142-01 but De Walt and the parts suppliers tried so far say that the OEM item is no longer available. (the router is year 2000 approx) Failing a source for the OEM part does anybody have a used one for sale or...

Why are plunge cuts more dangerous?

To the original question. The problem is not kick back per se - more that the saw can push itself up out of the work if handled incorrectly - or presumably if a cut was for whatever reason to close tightly on the trailing edge of the blade. The leading edge of the blade as you cut forward in...

    User Manual for 2009 Hammer A3 31/41

Hi all. Wondering if anybody might have an electronic copy of the user manual for the 2009 and previous Hammer A3 31/41 planer thicknessers that they could email to me? The catch is that it needs to apply to the red/grey model with the centre mounted fence where the tables are lifted separately...
