• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    RIP Cherry Hill

I know we have some metal bashers here so it is sad to hear of the passing of Cherry Hill one of the most accomplished model engineers at the grand age of 93. RIP Cherry https://craftsmanshipmuseum.com/artisan/cherry-hill/

    Inverters appearing in domestic appliances

Inverters in the sense of Variable Frequency Drives have been in use for many years to give machines variable speeds when used with 3 phase motors as some of you know. However they are being introduced to various domestic items now. *Air conditioner/heat pumps to give variable rates of heating...

Dining room wall unit dresser thing

Following on from the project referred to here https://www.thewoodhaven2.co.uk/threads/sliding-dovetail-proportions.9972/ I thought it best to expand on the project in this board. I started with a scale drawing of the target location. A completely blank canvas. Permanently open door way to the...

    Sliding Dovetail proportions

If I said I have a project on the drawing board then that would imply great maturity than that which exists partway in my head and the backs of a couple of envelopes. Im considering an item of dining room furniture a bit like the top half of a traditional dresser to be wall hung. Around 8' wide...

Don't forget to listen when your machines talk to you

The last time I run some timber through the thicknesser, it made a strange groaning noise when I switched it off. Tried again and more groans. Yesterday I decided to investigate. One of the drive chains was really tight on the tension side and all the slack on the other. The tight side was tuned...

    Unorthodox box making.

I would not claim to have a fraction of the skills of the several box makers who frequent these parts and invariably have problems of one sort or other when cutting off the lid. One method I have tried is to use the table saw to cut most of the depth of the sides leaving a mm or so to cut by...

    Good value hinges sought

Looking for suggestions for 25-30mm ish solid drawn brass hinges. I'm not in in the Brusso/smart hinge region of the market but looking for something better than brassed steel with randomly positioned holes a la BnQ. Knowing that the hinge dimensions will dictate the box thickness, I want to buy...

There's a moose loose aboot this hoose

We live opposite a field and are used to seeing the odd mouse around but this year we have found a number of holes up through floor board and even one through a plastered wall under a window sill in our pantry. These have all been blocked up and reinforced with metal cut from soft drink cans but...

    Energy tariffs

A bit of a heads up on energy pricing. Just been looking around the market and see there are starting to be a few competitive looking tariffs on offer again after a period of a year or so with no effective competition. If you are on a variable tariff now, then it could be worth fixing as...

    Home phone curiosity

For about a year our home phone has changed over to VOIP and comes in via the router. This has a call logger and an option to block pita callers. As you can see a certain Paul Lacoux who is already blocked tried 8 times within a minute to call us. We know of no such person. I assume it must...
