• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Tracy Tools HSS drill bits?

Has anyone used these? They are pretty cheap and I'd assume at least decent quality from Tracy Tools, but thought I'd ask. https://www.tracytools.com/product/drill-set-10-10mm/ or https://www.tracytools.com/product/drill-set-10-13mm/

    Lignum vitae?

The mallets arrived, definitely LV (end grain is really clear) - once I'd removed the nasty varnish and wax combo, the one we wanted came up nicely. The handle is pretty straight cane and fits the head well so I think we'll leave it as it is, tho I did have to cut it down a little. Anyway, now...

Lovely! Mallet envy. :-) This is ours:

    Lignum vitae?

Thank you Lons - I think I'll be ok trying with the metal lathe and if I struggle, I know a couple of people nearby with wood lathes who I could ask to either do the job for me or let me do it myself on their lathe. I really appreciate the offer. As for the tool clip, yep, that's the thing I...

    Lignum vitae?

Thanks both. This is a photo I've taken from an ad for almost the same S-P set in slightly better condition than ours(!), showing the handle on the mallet. Do you think that's ash, hickory or something else? It doesn't look much like the hickory ones we have on our other hammers, but it does...

    Lignum vitae?

I'm not a collector as such, but I'm sure this must be collector mentality - it's a missing bit in this kit http://thewoodhaven2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=8948 and I've become obsessed with filling the gaps! And I've found myself looking at other S-P hammers and dollies, wondering if I need to...

    Lignum vitae?

I'm looking for a cylindrical lignum vitae mallet and can't really find one of the right size and certainly not the right make. So I'm looking for an alternative make. I've spotted this one for sale but can't get a reply from the seller about what wood it is. I know it's hard to identify many...

    Sykes Pickavant panel hammers

Thanks both. The hammer is now sat in oil at that end, Bob - time will tell if it works. The link is great Andy, really helpful and questions answered! My lad has better eyesight than me, and it turns out we do have the 562 hammer, I could have sworn that one was unmarked. We spent some of...

    Sykes Pickavant panel hammers

We picked up these panel beating tools yesterday. All need some cleaning up but look to be in reasonable condition (apart from one handle which needs replacing, and one which is loose, and the panel itself seems to have some primer misted across the lower half, not sure how to deal with that...

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

:-) Thanks all for your help, works a treat!

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

Thanks SB - I've had a go at your suggestion but can't get a pic showing what's going on, the snag (or whatever it is) seems to be just about the centre of the panel which leaves very little space at the edges. I thought I'd found the answer buried in the instructions for fitting an extra to...

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

I did read the FM, Bob :-). There's an exploded diagram but I can't see anything on it that shows why it wouldn't just lift out, albeit with wires attached - which is why I'm reluctant to pull any harder, in case they are very short and I do damage that I certainly couldn't repair. ps Here's a...

Record power RSBG8 - wheel grits?

Does anyone know what grits the two wheels on this are? https://www.recordpower.co.uk/product/r ... th-uk-plug For some reason RP don't seem to make it apparent. I'm looking for one with 120 on the wider wheel, and not too harsh on the narrow one. Thanks, C

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

That's more like it. We scored the largest diameter circle, cut the corners off, then the lad crept up on the circumference on a belt sander and finished off on the lathe. Facing was then easy, and I used a HSS tool I'd made instead of the carbide tip I'd been using before, much better. Thanks...

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

I'm currently trying to make an adapter so we can mount brake discs on the lathe, holding the disc close to the chuck so it extends into the gap in the bed and thus fits. The plate in the photo is welded onto a 45mm rod, and I'm now trying to remove any distortion and face the plate. The problem...

    NPT Thread Helicoil

Just an update - the thread is definitely 1/4" BSP and the cap screws perfectly into it; on the mill we drilled out the diameter of the carb to 14mm to create space for the bush and putty, there's now a few thou gap for the putty and a slight shoulder for the bush to sit against; we're waiting...

    13A Plasma Cutter

We've got a cheap nibbler attachment for a regular drill, I'd forgotten it was there tbh. I just had a go with it, and it cuts well through 1mm steel but won't fit over the 'MoT welding' we seem to be dealing with a lot. (I didn't realise MoT welding was a thing til recently - seems to be a...

    13A Plasma Cutter

Thanks for the reply, Al. The cutter will be for car panels essentially, so only about 1mm (sometimes 2mm) thickness - I made the decision yesterday after watching my lad reach with an angle grinder into really awkward places and corners, trying to cut panels out - the torch on a plasma cutter...

    13A Plasma Cutter

We're looking to get one that works properly on a regular domestic supply. This one looks good (John 'doubleboost's' review) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Vf5QORwcnU but not cheap at £500+, plus the air compressor. Are there others that would work unproblematically on 13A plug that cost less...

    NPT Thread Helicoil

Right. From what I can tell, we'd need: 1/4" x 0.3" BSP Helecoil 17/32 drill (https://www.thorintl.com/Drill-Sizes-He ... F-BA.shtml) 1/4" x 19tpi tap. However! Bob - on the question of having enough material left on the housing to drill and tap, I'm having serious doubts. With the jet in...
