• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I know this is sharpening but...

Oddly, I never had a problem with that. Some suitably shaped slipstones always seemed enough for me. Mind you, I haven't carved in a very long time.

Daizo Mitsukawa, traditional saw blacksmith in Japan.

Ooh, that looks really interesting. I shall save this for after my other half has gone to bed. :)

I know this is sharpening but...

I was reading a thread on sharpening 'over there' that is descending into the usual from the usual suspects and I was contemplating my jig use which I've decided is intermittent but does happen when I want to. I then thought that what I could do with is something for carving gouges as these are...

    Anti-rust paper

There was an American chap in the 'other place' that used to get into spats with the resident troll that had a lot of opinions about various things. One of which was rust prevention. He maintained that the rust prevention stuff you can buy is just mineral oil and that it works as well as...

    Adjustable Bit

Well it works. 1 3/4" hole. Surprisingly easy but I wouldn't want to have to do too many of them.

    Adjustable Bit

Thanks Andy. Wasn't quite straightforward and took some trial and error to get the sizing right. Then the part wasn't strong enough for the slotted end and broke when I put torque on it with the screwdriver. My solution was to create a very short and deep slot that fitted a small screwdriver...

    Adjustable Bit

Thanks Geoff, I couldn't find that patent when I looked, only the two later ones. Anyway, it turned out that it isn't a 3/8" 16 tpi but 5/16" 16 tpi. I wish I'd discovered that before I ordered from eBay. I thought that as it's not a standard BSW thread that I might have some problems getting...

    Adjustable Bit

I managed to find the thread guage and an chuffed that I have needed to finally use it. 😁 Definitely a 3/8" bolt with 16tpi. Off to eBay for a bolt now.

    Adjustable Bit

I have used the working one that came in the box twice now. Once to cut a hole for a new lock on my workshop door and now to create the right size hole for a guide scope camera in some protective foam.

    Adjustable Bit

No worries @AndyP, thanks for looking anyway. I've just managed to find two of the patents: McElney's and Jennings. Not much help unfortunately.

    Adjustable Bit

That's awesome. 😁 Many thanks @AndyT So, now I need to work out the thread. Ooh, just remembered, I have a thread guage somewhere, I shall have to find it.

    Adjustable Bit

Thanks all. I did find it in a car boot. It came in a wooden box along with a second one which has come in handy a couple of times. I will probably keep an eye out for another but I like the challenge of getting this one working again, especially if it's a bit rare. BTW, I think it was made by...

    Adjustable Bit

I was just thinking that I could use a screw or bolt. There's a ridge in the middle that I assume holds the missing part and then rotating it would move the adjustable cutter. So the required notch would be needed. It looks like the hole?for the bolt is 5/16" but trying such a bolt and the...

    Adjustable Bit

Hi, I have a couple of adjustable bits but this one seems to have something missing. Does anyone know what the piece that is missing looks like? If possible I'd like to make a replacement but I need to know what to make. Just noticed that the underside of the sliding part is toothed so might...

Lots of Holtzapffel lathes at auction

There were a lot of bargains there. I completely forgot about it or I might have been tempted by a few things. Probably for the best in the long run.

    Wales 20mph speed limit

As others have said, the 20 limit is pretty much ignored everywhere. If the police won't stop the scroats that are a common feature riding untaxed, uninsured scramblers and quads, quite often doing wheelies and tearing up grass verges and roundabouts, why would they bother with someone doing 25...

    A double stopped dovetail housing!

Many thanks for that Andy. When exploring old stone mines, there are some with the original cranes still there. They were used to pull the quarried blocks out from the worked face and then to lift into trucks. I had always wondered how the Lewis was fitted into the dovetail shaped hole. It...

    Interesting Looking Leg Vice

I could imitate a certain person on the other site that would spout a load of stuff about 'trad' and the cost but it looks to be a well-engineered piece of kit. There was one thing that sprang to mind which was that the chap doing the demo in the video was doing a lot of stooping to get to the...

    Record 52E Nut Thread Size

I don't have the space for a full on shave horse so was thinking this would be something I could stash in a corner and bring out when needed. I hadn't seen the one you showed above but there seem to be a few out there of varying degrees of fuss. This is one I was considering: Shave Pony Here's...

    Record 52E Nut Thread Size

I've had an end vice in that bench ever since I bought it. I was an appalling thing though that racked terribly. I did use it on occasion but probably not very often. I will probably use it to hold pieces to be worked on with a drawknife as that end has more room to stand. I may also knock...
