• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Diamond plates

I've got some single sided ones off ebay, they are pretty thin and flexible. I knew that when I bought them and intended to stick to a piece of glass I already had. I'm not a heavy user like Mike and they're lasting fine after a couple of years use. At the other end of the spectrum Workshop...

Seven Heirlooms - and one for my great niece, too.

You're getting pretty good as this Malc! Sanding dish is a clever timesaver for repeatable shapes.

12" thick ice on the lake good for ice fishing.

Never tried pike but all I've heard is it tastes earthy. I'd give it a go if someone served it up!

12" thick ice on the lake good for ice fishing.

What are you hoping to catch? R.E. fishing being UK's biggest hobby most of that I'd guess would be angling in rivers or lakes and throwing it back. Why catch fish you can't eat?!

    Acorn tree house

Love the treehouse and decorative shingle work! Is that a look in the treehouse then?

    Space X

I agree that Musk and other private entities have made technological advances beyond governments. But you can't get away from the fact it is in even if only in part a (as Steve put it) "manhood waggling" competition. It's that stereotypical male need to conquest, dominate and be first. I...

    dishwasher

Just got a new dishwasher as I'm fitting a new kitchen. It opens the door itself, during the eco programme the last 1 1/4 of the nearly 4hr programme is drying with the door open. Was surprised by this time and wondered what if any power it is consuming at this stage. I'm not sure if the...

Electric staple gun - any recommendations?

I'll warn you off the corded Titan one, although mine is a few years old now it is awful! Doesn't have enough power to drive the staples into even softwood.

    Winter is over

Not much snow in Kent but amazing how localised the variation is. Go up towards the downs from us and there was some snow which makes sense, but travel only 5 miles in the other direction they also had a bit of snow! Got back to Gatwick at 11pm last night. Wasn't fun last night trying to get...

    French food, produce and markets

You also have to get a check over at a vets in France before coming home! Might do it in the future for a longer holiday but we typically did link weekends to France and it’s not worth the hassle or expense to bring the dog.

    French food, produce and markets

We used to go regularly to France pre COVID and Brexit but have also stopped. Having a dog which we like to take away it is almost impossible now. Shame. Aren't all countries going this way at different rates and it's not just food but all aspects of live. UK is I think just quicker to take...

    Woodwork of sorts

What about the mobile mills based on a chainsaw? No personal experience but follow the furniture designer Sebastian Cox on Instagram who uses only British wood and often shares videos of him and his team going in and breaking down fallen trees in situ. Once broken down each board could be...

    brushes and rollers

I also would recommend the Two fussy bloke rollers. I've not come across those paint brushes before though - are they superior to Purdy which has been my go-to brush brand in recent years.

New table saw (UK)….. that is the question

Everyones's circumastances are different, but this is my experience (I have all three as well). When setting up my current workshop which is a fairly small at just under a single car garage I went for things in the following order. I had prior experience with all three options and my first...

    Bob '9fingers' Minchin

Not been on here properly over Christmas and so only just seen this. Met Bob years ago at a UWK bash, he was so generous with knowledge and time he'll be sorely missed. Condolences to the family, particularly the timing.

    Mike's ext'n & renovation (solar panels)

This must be one of the finest porches in the country! I've never seen or noticed the tiled joint between a roof and wall in place of leading, looks great. Is it common and I've just never noticed it?

Calling Scottish Cooks - traditional haggis?

Every shopping centre in the country had a busker playing panpipes in the 90s!

Calling Scottish Cooks - traditional haggis?

Those Cornish pipes are certainly different! I do like Uilleann or Irish pipes, particularly played by Lankum Lankum

Calling Scottish Cooks - traditional haggis?

I knew what Haggis was made from, have eaten it and enjoy it. Hadn't ever really thought about the nuts and bolts of actually turning the less savoury parts of an animal into edible food! I don't think I'll be giving this one a try but fascinating to read about!

Round oak table (a la GE Street in the V&A) Finished.

Always amazed by your speed and quality of work. Those angled mortise and tenons are very inpressive. I’ve seen the unfinished underside on lots of bits of furniture, backs of drawers too. As you say underside of tables often have adze marks. What I’ve never really thought about is why they...
