• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

Trying to keep it not too technical.. Your meter uses its internal battery to send a small amount of DC electricity into whatever you connect the probes to. How much goes through is measured in Ohms. Even copper wire resists the current a little so it will have a resistance value that is a low...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

If you do get a multimeter measure the resistance of each coil (the mains connections is one coil, capacitor connections the other.). Both will be a low number of ohms but the mains should be higher than the cap. It would be interesting to compare faulty new unit to replacement when it arrives...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

The peculiar behaviour is what was making me wonder if the power and cap were on the wrong windings... but that shouldn't be possible if the connectors are different. No tech info on the motor I could find to see if this new model is wired the same as the old one.

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

I can't find any technical info on that motor. One possibly stupid thought - one picture I saw showed the two connectors... one for capacitor and one for power - and they looked identical. Are they? could the power and cap plugs be swapped?

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

Do you have a 2 way terminal block so if you cut the wires from the existing capacitor you can rejoin them afterwards? If so cut them and bodge the wires from the plug onto the spades - poke the stripped wire through the hole in the spade and tape it in place. Now you can see if it runs and if...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

There is no polarity on a 2 wire mains capacitor. If the new one has wires coming out of it can't you just cut the terminal off the end and connect the wires? Edit... your text says the opposite to your picture :) Any old electrical junk around with spade connected wires inside you could rob...

    Bending steel garden edging

100mm x 3mm steel... is that black iron bar, flat steel stock or cut mild steel sheet? I didn't think black bar that section was a thing but I did find someone selling it. That would be the safer material to use as it will have rounded corners. Guillotined steel sheet cut to 100mm wide will...

    MS Outlook replacement

TB will set up imap by default so the messages will be on the mail server not in TB so storage limits don't come in to it except for the amount the server allows you. TB will import outlook messages if they are in the default location. I have a TB folder called outlook import with my old...

    MS Outlook replacement

The pictures posted while I was typing don't look much like my TB. It says 'unified folders' which I think may be an add on that combines all your accounts to one inbox. Sorry but can't see a way to safely post a screen shot of mine.

    MS Outlook replacement

I use Thunderbird. Yes it does have tabs but it I think it just shows you the settings tab until you add an account. The tab with the account(s) on it does look very much like outlook. Like firefox there are add ons you can install. I have a lot of folders to keep things organised and it is...

Reference works to EPDM dressing. Help, didn't see this one coming....

This was my EPDM adventure for my workshop roof. https://www.thewoodhaven2.co.uk/threads/new-roof-on-my-workshop.3472/ I used the flexible flashing material with no problem so feel free to skip forward to that. You might need the tip I picked up about internal corner fixing too using the...

    In-car navigation conundrum....

I bought one of these years ago - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07FNZWXXV?th=1 It's a rubber type material that is quite grippy and doesn't slide about. I don't need it for my car as i use android auto and don't need the phone screen. i've used it on various rental cars on holiday where I...

Help please, I need to visualise Celtic knot diameters

Wouldn't it just be in the same ratio of starting square size to final round diameter? So (say) 25:16 ratio for a pen in mm would be 63/25 x 16 = 34mm dia..

    Workshop Uses for 3D Printing

Not visited this thread in a while. Like the idea of a printed Manfrotto tripod plate that continues to become a mounting for whatever. Or can fix to something without having to have a 1/4" thread involved.

    Vinyl not so wrapped...

Screwfix do spray adhesive and they are open Sunday so.. Out to the workshop and it looks worse. The front edge was still stuck so i protected it from me accidentally pulling it off with some clamped on metal. Plan was to coat it and let it down slowly while rubbing it down from the clamped...

    Vinyl not so wrapped...

I've found my can of contact adhesive and it is still liquid but there are so many health warnings on the can I think I need to be outside...and rain is coming. Maybe better to order some safer spray adhesive so to be continued....

    Vinyl not so wrapped...

I'll have a go at sticking it tomorrow. Not sure how easy it will be to coat the flap of vinyl so I'll try that first. if it's awkward I think you can get spray on contact adhesive so that will be plan B. Pictures to follow..

    Vinyl not so wrapped...

I'm still here :) I've been away on a long cruise holiday to miss the cold weather. It nearly worked. 30 ish years ago I was working all hours and wasn't into woodworking anyway and the bedroom needed furniture. We had a local firm install wardrobes and fitted drawer units etc. and they did a...
