• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Seven Heirlooms - helluva lot of rubbing so far!

You've got way more patience than I have Malc. They look lovely.

    Old Glue - an experiment

I'm going to be taking my travel tool chest for a little jaunt in the fairly near future and I've started thinking about which sort of glue to take with me. Most of the glue I have is rather old and I thought it would be quite interesting try to compare their efficacy. I've seen quite a few...

    What I have fixed today

About 4½ years ago, I made this shooting board: It's one of my most often used tools and it's worked perfectly for me. It takes seconds to adjust for square and it's been pretty rare that it needed any adjustment at all. I've recently been shooting the ends on quite a lot of pieces of 40 mm...

WIP - my version of Dr Al’s travel tool chest and workbench

I put finish on everything when I did my tool chest, but I doubt it was really necessary. For what it's worth, here's the post where I asked exactly the same question you just did (at the end of the post): https://thewoodhaven2.co.uk/threads/holiday-toolchest.7477/page-13#post-152209 and...

    Mike builds a teardrop (Gas)

That's a really neat way to retain the bottle.

    Another pet gone...

Really sorry to hear that Mark - you really have had a rough year of it. I was a complete mess when we took Bramble in for her final vet visit and I'm dreading the day we do the same for Treacle. They bring so much joy into our lives that there's nothing to regret but that doesn't make it easy...

Fix dovetail screwups before or after glueup?

    I couldn't agree more

Propane produces higher heat output than butane I think, which will be handy if you want to heat treat any blades while you're away on holiday :D

Fix dovetail screwups before or after glueup?

I think that's similar to my attitude with this (and most things I make if I'm honest). If I do a good job of making it and I'm pleased with the initial look of it then I'm happy. If it gets dings and knocks from being used then that's just a sign it's being used and appreciated so that's fine.

Fix dovetail screwups before or after glueup?

Oooh, that must have made a few "choice words" come out. If it were me I think I'd try to do everything I can pre-glue-up. At least that way you've always got post-glue-up as a fall-back option. For really tiny gaps it's probably easier post-glue-up (sometimes just some careful choice of...

What size chisels do you use the most?

I had another look at my tool chest chisel drawer when I got home. I designed it so that it has 8 slots that will take almost any of my chisels, although only 2 will take the longest ones & the slots get a bit shorter as you go up. Finally, it has a dedicated slot for the 3 mm one as I was...

What size chisels do you use the most?

He's older than he looks & remarkably productive for a 250 year old 🤣

What size chisels do you use the most?

I think it depends on what I'm expecting to do. Boxes would want narrower chisels (3 mm or even 2 mm), furniture would likely need wider ones (25 mm plus). My 18 mm (just under 3/4") is probably my most used one, followed by the 12 mm and then the 3 mm. My skewed end chisels come out quite a...

    Mike builds a teardrop (Gas)

I watched Neil Paskin's video on fibreglassing a canoe a few years ago & it looked quite the job so I'm very impressed. Sounds like you've gone about it in a sensible & methodical way & it has clearly paid dividends. The caravan looks great, well done.

That went right over my head (pun intended given the thread topic).

Do you think aluminum threaded rod and bolts good enough for light duty moxon style vise?

That's a very good point about plating wear. Agreed that it's probably best to go unplated. Acme or trapezoidal threads are better if the vice is going to be worked hard but that might not be the case for a travel tool chest.

Do you think aluminum threaded rod and bolts good enough for light duty moxon style vise?

It's for a vice, so something like this (except with two screws as it's a Moxon):
