• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Some promising sounding news

We have a lot of dieback around here and it’s ravaged most of the trees, I made a post a few years ago about felling a few of the ones that we had because they were beginning to become unsafe. Interestingly, the healthiest ash tree we have was poisoned about a decade ago and when a decent...

    classic machines

My condolences, clearing out someone else's belongings isn't an easy job, even more so when you have to deal with machinery weighing several hundred kilograms. Unfortunately, most woodworking machinery dealers won't want to deal with machines this old as they don't comply to the modern...

Chainsaw milling angle of attack ?

With chains and bandsaw bands in green wood, it’s always best to rip against the grain if possible. This way you’re producing short-grain chippings rather than stringy shavings which can clog the chain/band and slow down the cut rate.

    classic machines

Welcome Dave, What do you want to know about them? I think I have a couple of catalogues that feature the Wilson planer and the Wadkin ripsaw, if that interests you.

    new houses

It's tragic really, there's only a finite amount of good land in the country and we're trying to build houses en-mass on it. It's similar here where they want to build 100 extra houses in a village with serious traffic problems as the main road through it is only just wide enough for two cars...

    Change of plan

It's a buyer's market at the moment with all the industrial auctions and businesses going under, you can pick up very nice full-size Felder and Altendorf panel saws for peanuts. Obviously, the Hammer is more hobby/light trade oriented unlike the industrial kit, but still, a bit of economic...

    Double glazing again...

Why not make your own timber windows Steve? They’re not particularly difficult to produce and they would be much more in keeping with the heritage of the building than any plastic facsimiles. Then you also have the bonus of some footage for YouTube if you fancy. The Facebook thing is weird, I...

    Double-glazing problem

People say this all the time, but it's actually quite rare that someone goes through a window with externally beaded casements as it's a right pain to get the beads out and you make a hell of a racket doing it. Far more common is to smash a window that's next to a thumb turn or Yale lock and...

    Apprenticeships

There's been a lot of rhetoric from the current government lately regarding apprenticeships and the construction industry, and how they are going to introduce 120,000 extra apprenticeships across all sectors, force home builders to build homes to schedules with penalties if they don't complete...

    Double-glazing problem

That looks like it's inside the DG unit rather than the internal/external gaskets? I've not seen this happen before, but it looks like the powder coating has peeled off the aluminium extrusion around the inside of the unit, which basically means either you live with it or you replace the entire...

    royal mail woes

I've never had any issues with RM. I always send stuff with them as I know it will get there, unlike when sending stuff with the like of Yodel or Hermes/EVRI even though RM is a fair bit more expensive. I had to send something via Parcelforce this week because regular RM couldn't handle it as...

    Battery 'hand' truck ?

1000kg is the capacity of a small dumper, not a power barrow. In my experience, a 300kg power barrow fully laden is very difficult to manuever despite being powered and very prone to sinking in the ground, 1000kg would simply be downright dangerous in the small footprint on uneven terrain.

    Tool identification wanted in Cockermouth

Well, I would never have guessed it was a saw set. Very unusual.

    Help staining a door

Pine can look blotchy when stained, particularly around knots where you have reversing grain so these get much darker than the more benign straight grained areas. You can mitigate some of this by applying a very thinned down coat of shellac before staining to seal the reversing grain, which...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

The way it's fluctuating on start up, and the way it stops absolutely dead is very unusual. I don't think there is a centrifugal switch on this motor, usually those are on Start-Run capacitor motors and there doesn't appear to be much room for one on the motor. It may be that the new capacitor...

    Wadkin DM handwheel

If you’re not missing bits I would take it to someone who could braze it back together and ask for a price, once ground down and painted over you’d struggle to tell it was repaired.

    Slats in window shutters.

I would think most professionals would opt for Accoya (Trade name, not species) now, but theres nothing wrong with very carefully selected hardwood either. The problem with shutters is that they’re made in several parts from very small sections which are more prone to warping as a whole. So if...

    Help staining a door

It's old, but I wouldn't say it's very old, judging by what looks like plywood panels. My personal plan of action would be to dismantle the door, repair what needs repairing, clean up the joints, and reassemble the door. It sounds harder than it is, and seeing that you're 90% of the way to a...

    Wadkin DM handwheel

How badly broken is the original? It's not a part that gets significant stress, so I would be tempted to take it to someone who could braze it back together for a few beer tokens. Alternatively, I have seen some morticers fitted with a car steering wheel as a replacement, if you're really not...

Electric Motor Problem, 2nd new motor rec’d, and resistance tests

Definitely sounds like a capacitor issue if it’s humming but not turning, unless there’s something jamming it somewhere, obviously.
