• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Big problems ebonising.

When I've done it I used Tannin used for making wine I bought from Amazon. The tannin in it comes from Chestnut bark. Like you it is black when wet lightening up when dry. I used a dry rag to remove the dust and then reapplied. When the finish, oil in my case is applied it changes to a deep...

Any luthiers here? Thinking about making a guitar.

When I was 14 (58 years ago) my father made me an acoustic guitar from plans in a Popular Mechanics Magazine. He used scrap wood from his repair and refinishing business, only buying the fret board and keys. Played reasonably well for a $10 guitar. He also made a couple Appalachian Dulcimers...

    Slightly off topic - Abrafiles

Search rod saws or rod saw blades and you'll get more. Most will have the swaged end for hacksaw pins rather than the ones Eric mentioned. There are also different lengths to be had too. Pete

New Workshop layout, your thoughts please.

Mike if that's cluttered then you better not come into my shop. I've eaten in restaurants that had much much worse kitchens. Ian my shop is 24'x 28' approximately and the ceiling is about 9' along the short side and rises to about 12' in the centre along the peak. Scissor trusses. It is all...

    Chucks

Lee Valley stopped selling the Axminster chucks a few years back, possibly as far back as during Covid. Pete

    OOPs and some.

Last couple vehicles I bought (pick up trucks) were automatics because that's what they had on the lot. If I wanted a manual tranny I would have to wait 3 to 6 months for it to come from the factory. Lots of vehicles here can only be had with automatic transmissions. My half ton Chevy Silverado...

Knee Deep In Sh-T is and understatement.

Doug pretty much has it. The house is a walk out in the front with the soil in the back being 6' or 8' higher than the front. Pipes exit below the footings and then slope down to the tank about 40' from the house. I'm told the frost line is 10', or that is how far I had to have the screw piles...

Shouldn't that be "Major pain in the butt."? Pete

If it makes you feel any better ours is 14'/4.25M down to the top of the tank. A 3' diameter concrete culvert goes straight down to the middle of it so both compartments can be accessed. There is a pump down there to pump the digested liquid to a septic mound (kind of like a concentrated field)...

    Wild Blueberry Rake/Picker

Is it mated to a cloth bag or a bucket? I've been watching a "survival" show called Alone where 10 people are dropped off in a very remote location to see who will survive the longest. An Alaskan native made a comb similar to yours on the end of a wooden scoop for collection of berries rather...

Agreed the bug racket works great on flies, mosquitos and other small flying bugs but wasps just get really really mad and try to get even. 🐝 Pete

    Unwanted calls

Ring Ring "Hello." "Duct Cleaning Service calling." East Indian accent. "My ducks are clean. Can you wash my chickens and turkeys?" "What?" "If you can't help me I'll have to go. Bye." Pete

Wish we had something like it. Do the call centres in India follow the law? Pete
