• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    DIY disaster

Well, it's a new year and I have probably just made my biggest DIY disaster to date! Last year I posted about making an island unit with a stainless steel top. Yesterday I was doing the final touches routing the oak lipping so it was flush with edge of the stainless steel. All was going well...

    kitchen update

I also posted this on UKW but it is always useful to get a mix of opinion: We are planning a kitchen update on a budget, reusing a number of the carcasses and the doors, which still look good. They are a solid oak ikea design that still look contemporary but are no longer supplied by Ikea...

    plasterboarding a kitchen ceiling

We have knocked through from kitchen to dining room to create a 40 m2 kitchen/family room and opened up the kitchen to the stairway. We had to install two steel beams which the structural engineer said had to be painted with intumescent paint to meet 30 min fire rating. Fine did that. Because we...

    Air nailer problems

I recently bought the Clarke CFN34 34° Clipped Head Air Frame Nailer (I think the same one Malcolm used when building his workshop). I've had no problems using 50 and 60 mm nails but it has been a very mixed bag with the 90 mm nails. About half the nails go in fine and then I get a run where I...

    oldy woldy phone

Mrs Halo has just returned with a classic 70's 80's rotary phone. She wants to put it in our front hall. Only problem is that there is no phone socket in the hall and even if there were I disabled the bell wire long ago to prevent any interference on our ADSL line. Before I start the painful...

    Non-combustible wall

Also posted this on UKW but I need all the help I can get for this one! Renovations continue.... We planned all the renovations and submitted plans to BC about 2 1/2 years ago. I engineered in non-combustible walls for a corner woodstove and built said walls last year. LOML now wants the site...

    stand/enclosure for electric piano

For my FILs 70th in September we bought him an electric piano/organ. My wife wasn't entirely happy as it was just a standard plastic box type keyboard and didn't really fit in with the rest of his furniture. I was therefore "commissioned" to make a stand/enclosure for it. A bit nervous because...

New induction motor for my table saw

I seem to be going through motors recently.... I got my table saw very cheap a few years ago because the motor was "dead". It had been abused a bit (well a lot) and had shorted out. I managed to fix the short and the motor has always just about worked - it deals with ply and mdf etc just fine...

    CamVac capacitor

Looking again: The two black wires at the top of the picture were connected to the motor at one end of the capacitor. The wires at the other end of the capacitor go through to the switch. I think this is more like the thing I would need if I replaced it...

    CamVac capacitor

So I was prepping a few oak boards on the planer thicknesser and I got a bit carried away with myself and may have forgotten to check how full the bin on the CamVac was  . I heard a little "pop" and noticed that shavings were building up in the extraction hose. Realising what I had done...

    External door quandry

We are wanting buy a new external kitchen door and are going for a full glass (pattern 10?) design as our kitchen is pretty dark. I would prefer a solid wooden frame but the boss is worried about the door swelling and sticking etc. If we go for a engineered door I am worried about it...

    Pocket door recommendations

Hi All, With Christmas out the way we are looking at next years big project. We are moving our ground floor bathroom. To comply with building regs disabled accessibility rules we are going to have to fit a pocket door. There are lots of brands out there but very little reviews. We are looking...

    Axminster HD16BC manual

Hi All, I just bought the above drill second hand and was wondering if the manual was available anywhere? I did have a look at Bobs manuals sticky but couldn't find it there. Thanks, H.

    Building non-combustible wall for woodburner

Hi All, I've started to think about the next stage of house refurbishment which involves, among other things, installing a wood burner in the corner of a room. Scottish Building regs state that "walls abutting the hearth should be at least 75mm thick non-combustible material at least 1.2 m high...

    Auto-start on dc

I know this has been covered before but none of the solutions offered work perfectly for the way my machines are set up. Problems: auto-take off switches / master switches seem to be rated at max of 3kW which doesn't cover my CamVac and tablesaw, never mind plugging multiple things into the...

Planning Permission and Building Regs in Scotland

Ok. I don't pretend to be an expert but given the planning permission discussions on other threads which pertain to England/other parts of UK I thought I would post what I think are the most pertinent parts which I think apply to someone planning to build a workshop in scotland. Again - these...

    insulating behind window shelf?

The core of our house is built around an old cottage, built around 1900, with a large addition built in 1990. The walls of the old part of the building are standard whinstone rubble filled walls which are approx 2-2.5 feet thick. Then a mix of lathe and plaster and newer gyproc plasterboard. We...

    Repairing door opening

Strictly this isn't woodworking but is preparation for fitting a door so I hope it counts! I am in the process of dividing a room and opened up an old doorway that had been boarded up. Removal of the studwork shows that the brickwork around the doorway is less than perfect and so I would like...

    Wood preserver and glue

Hi All, I have now finished all the joinery on a couple of garden gates. The are just made with joinery grade redwood. My question is whether to glue it all up then treat with wood preserver or treat before hand and make sure I get plenty on the mortice and tenon joints. The only reason I am...

    Painting exterior woodwork

I need to refurbish my wooden double glazed windows and paint a couple of gates I have just made. I last did the windows in 2010 using a Dulux trade system. I followed their instructions to the letter on 19 windows taking me the best part of the summer working weekends. It was meant to last...
