• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Fixing a Chipped Japanese Chisel Blade

Not so much a sharpening thread as a 'fixing' one. Last week when chopping out the rear panel rebate corners, my 12mm Japanese chisel stopped behaving as a proper chisel and started cut weirdly. When I took it out of the cut, it soon became evident as to the reason: Being a 'silly billy'...

The Niff-Naff Cabinet; back panel rebate

My wife likes to collect little odds n'sods when we're on a our travels; they have no special financial value but she 'requested' a smallish wall hung cabinet to display them, mentioning that It needed a door to keep the dust off. I hoiked out a few lumps of Bubinga, a couple of which were crown...

    Router bit?

Right chaps, can anybody please point me in the direction of a router bit like wot this is: ...which will machine a bead and then leave a gradual bevel? It's the sort of detailing found on Chinese furniture: ...as so, but it appears nigh on impossible to find one - Rob

Puzzled I am and so was the V&A....

I spent an enjoyable few days last week with No.1 son and No.1 grandson (boy energy!!) in Bromley and on Wednesday last, I spent a fandabby day at the V&A. Just as I was going down the exit tunnel towards the Tube, I decided to look in on the last gallery on the lhs and spotted this very...

    Ash trees...Good News!

According to Ch4 news this evening, there's been a breakthrough. Boffins have been able to germinate and grow hundreds of ash 'die back' resistant seedlings in a week or so; I didn't fully understand what they'd done or how but it seemed pretty impressive...also that the technique could be done...

    Woodie chipbreaker

My current refurb project of an old try plane is making progress but I've discovered that the chipbreaker will need a considerable amount of work to bring it up to snuff: It's well out of square at both ends, but more worryingly, the threaded bolt is now very loose in the brass insert. I...

    Woodie Plane Re-furb

Andy P came over for the afternoon last week and brought me a fairly decent old wooden try plane: ...which he wasn't going to use and did I want it? It's in pretty good nick and hasn't been beaten to death with a big hammer, as is the usual case with many of these old woodies, though I've...

    Good stuff!

I had small but irritating leak in the 'shop which let in the wet when the 'typhoons' blew in the Autumn last year. It's been sealed with silicone for the last 20+ years which isn't ideal, so I tried some CTI clear adhesive/sealer today (after having cleared out all the suspect old sealant)...

    The Yaca Cabinet

I thought so too....what the hell's 'yaca'? It transpires that it's resinous softwood from the South Pacific. Google AI has this to say about it: 'AI Overview Yaca (often spelled Yaka or Dacrydium nidulum) is a premium, versatile softwood timber native to the South Pacific, specifically...

    Christmas has come early!

There was a rat-a-tat on the front door just now, whereupon SWIMBO took delivery of a parcel: It was from MikeG who a few days ago asked for my postal addy as he had "something" for me and upon opening it, out tumbled a pile of lovely Bog Oak...not the little cast iron cat, who seems to find...

JK cabinet with a 'V' door

Noodling through my various books (and online) recently, I came across this cabinet with a shallow 'V' section door: ...which I initially thought was beyond my meagre abilities to knock together. However, with most things JK, it's not quite as difficult as you first imagine, though granted...

    Chestnut Hard Wax Oil

I saw that Dr.Al was sloshing on some of this stuff onto one of his bowls, resulting in a very pleasant finish. My beef with this stuff is that the Osmo PolyX variety forms an impenetrable skin when the can is half empty, which means you need to cut the skin off with a blade to access the...

    What stripper?

Our old dining room chairs are solid teak, (now approx 40yo) finished with an acid catalyst lacquer. They need re-upholstering but I'm also thinking about re-finishing them at the same time and will obviously need to strip off the old lacquer. When we had a marine aquarium some years ago, the...

    Overflow bookshelves.....DUN

We have a bookcase in the lounge (made a few years ago) which is groaning so we have a need of an overflow bookshelf to go into the spare bedroom. It looks fairly straight forward but it ain't, principally 'cos the second shelf up from the bottom (not installed) has a 'step' in it so is on two...

    Decorating....and a few old bits

I've been decorating the lounge and had to empty the overstuffed bookcase and in doing so came across an old photo album dating from the very late 90's when I was making stuff for David Linley (DLF), but the first pic: ...dates from 1975, showing a pair of jewellery boxes. The right hand one...

    Darwin

Phill, my next door neighbour had a local oik yesterday making hay with a buzz saw hacking down part of a big hedge. During the day, I spotted said spotty oik without any protective gear of any sort and by around 4.45pm he'd finished...or so I thought. He'd obviously gone off for a fag and a...

    Zen Router

After having been with Zen for a couple of years (recommended by RogS) I've just replaced our router for the fourth time, now having installed a brand new bit of kit instead of the refurbished routers which are normally supplied. In conversation with a very pleasant techie type person in...

    Ducks in a Row

I had my prostate removed in 2016 and was informed thereafter that I needed a PSA test every year on roughly the date of the op (Sep) which I did for severial years thereafter. A couple of years ago the PSA test was changed to Jan, about the same time as the annual, fully comprehensive, all...

    JK's 'Silver Chest' DUN

The next big job that ought to keep me off the streets for a few months is an iconic 'Silver Chest' first made my Jim Krenov in 1961. He revisited this design several times and no two are the same; all are different: This project is reputed to be a bit 'tricky' and one person on InstaG...
