• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Help please with RJ45 - RJ11 cable problem

MIL’s residential home has some sort of weird (to me anyway) telelphony system. The Telephone has an RJ11 connection . T’other end of cable is RJ45. We need a longer cable, at least 10m so she does not need to get out of bed to answer the phone. An off the shelf RJ45 to RJ11, male to male cable...

Audio Books, how to use for ageing technophobes

I've been tasked with seeing if I can sort out a "simple" audio book player. It seems that Amazon/Audible seem to have the market sewn up (last time i bought an audio book it was on a cassette tape). App on smartphone is not an option. I dedicated MP3 player that has the Audible app my well be...

    Oops

I thought this was held securely in the button jaws while I tidied up the base. The rim broke as it hit the floor, even if I could find the bits I couldn’t possibly glue it; it was to part of a wedding gift. I have until late May to try again although the grain on this piece of yew was...

MAC users, mail connection activity logs

Earlier today Mac Mail wouldn’t open. EM pop up stated not enough space in the home folder. Checked Mac storage to find over 300gb of system data:eek:. Quick google an various Mac support forums suggested look in Mail > Window > Connection Doctor > Show logs. I deleted all the logs ( I had done...

    Hinged pot, beech

Another unmarked lump of wood from the pile, most likely beech. Was a delight to turn although I did not make such a good job of the inside. Hollowing has become by least enjoyable part of turning. Hinges from Prokraft .

    Solar Kiln, promising progress.

For reasons I still can’t get my head around we were 8 months late with our order for logs this year. Normally get them delivered in April, stacked outside for a year then bought under cover for 6 months before burning. In order to speed up the drying process so that these can be burned next...

    Which drive centre?

I’ve come to the conclusion I need a better drive centre. I currently only have the 4 prong which came with the Record 305 lathe. For bowl turning the screw chuck works fine but when spindle turning (pots at the moment) I do not want to waste timber turning away the screw hole. The 4 prong does...

    oak screw top pot

I ordered some round pot hinges a while back but the supplier sent me screw threads instead. They didn't want them back so I thought I would use them. It required a lot of thought for my wee brain in how to hold the two halves while making all the necessary cuts and recessses. Getting the grain...

    Walnut pot blank

I’ve had some walnut, I think, logs kicking around for a while and today I thought I’d make one of them round enough to make a pot. The plan was to remove all the bark but having got this far and seeing the patterns as the bark and cambium layer are being removed I rather hope I can leave some...

How much would train travel cost

If money didn’t have to be set aside for refunds? Daughter’s £40 fare from Exeter to Winchester fully refunded due to 1hr 15 min delay. Back in October same thing happened. Travelling for free for just an hour and bit delay. Following days train to Portsmouth was on time so had to pay full fare:(

What does a Request Timeout mean on Ping test, Now Starlink,

Battling with my ISP at the moment. Interweb connection up and down faster than a whore's drawers. I'm running ping tests on known websites that are up and running as checked on 3G data on phone. What does a Request Timeout mean on the ping test? All the ISP want to tell me is there is no fault...

MS Office Home & Student, 365??

Just spent all morning sorting out a problem where to save an MS file in word or excel I was being told to activate MS Office 365. I've been using home and student single use since Nov 2024 no discernable reason I could see why I should suddenly be asked to activate 365. My MS account confirmed...

Why I don’t do car engine maintenance any more

This is the Ford engine that will likely be powering the next car I buy. I can’t even find the spark plugs. There are 3 of them in there somewhere somewher

Beech bowl, probably, and in use

My labelling leaves a lot to be desired. This rather large and not at all round lump was definitely not going to be trusted to a glued on tenon. My approach to this is to try and use the existing shape as a guide to the finished shape by by turning away as little as possible. There are also a...

Hinge pins for 20yr old greenhouse, Thank you Andy T

20 years ago I made this for my father in law. With the exception of the shiplap on the backside it is made entirely from cedar and it still smells today how a greenhouse should. I dismantled it yesterday on preparation for a move to my sister-in-law and it seems that the hinges holding the...

    Excellent customer service, Dell

I’ve bought 4 Dell monitors over the past 5 or 6 years for my offspring to attach to various laptops, Macs and Windoze, some of which regularly get boxed up and moved from uni to home and back. The most recent purchase was for myself to attach to a Mac mini bought in October last year. This...

    Alternative shower fix

Had to move eldest daughter into a new rental flat last week. Amazingly there was no shower riser. Not wanting to drill holes and risk damaging the tiles in a rental property I came up with this solution. I fixed a telescopic shower curtain pole above the centre of the bath and slid the shower...

    Starlink and Wifi Calling

We’re being slowly pushed towards Starlink as we can’t get fibre without either vast expense or losing a mature flowing cherry tree. Existing adsl cable is blocked under the road and on our side in the garden. At the moment our ISP package includes free landline calls across Europe, and we still...

Channel4, Stream on Firefox, DRM issues OSX High Sierra. Solved

This has me stumped. I am trying to use my old Imac running OSX 10.13 as a small TV. BBC iPlayer works without a problem as does ITVx but when I try and watch Channel4’s streaming service I get an EM stating DRM is not enabled. Obviously I have made sure the Play DRM content box is checked. But...
