• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    White “Faskut” saw

If you look closely at smaller blades you will generally see a shallow ring around the inside perimeter of the blade that’s been rolled into the plate, that’s what gives smaller blades tension but much less critical than on a 36” resaw blade. I do actually know someone who has one of these...

Need help with Sapele wood sash windows

It could be any semi-translucent finish from any manufacturer, it’s anyone’s guess! I would say it looks like a light oak colour. Sikkens, Sadolin, Ronseal, Johnstones, Teknos, Anker Stuy, Morells, etc… all these brands make very similar products so it would be next to impossible to decide...

How The Spindle Moulder Gained Its Notoriety

I nearly bought those tenon cutters myself when I saw them on eBay, I'm glad Alex is enjoying them 😂

Bedec Barn Paint, thank you Mike G

Looking at it, the cill that's directly under the window when it's closed looks flat? That means when rain drives between the casement and the frame it will just sit in there, which is why you have a damp issue, and the timber begins to rot, which the woodlice love. Paint would certainly help...

    Resawing thick timbers...

I saw a video recently where someone was using a jobsite saw to cut a small sheet of plywood. They were pulling the sheet through from behind, and the sheet pinched on the blade, and amazingly, instead of kickback ripping the sheet out of their hands, the whole saw tipped over! The blade even...

    Resawing thick timbers...

“Deeping” as it was traditionally called is a pretty safe operation to carry out on the bench saw, as you have a short riving knife it’s even safer than without one, just approach the work carefully and you will be fine. I would definitely do the cut in increments, three or four passes, whilst...

Workshop Companion reaches a million subs!

Trouble is, long-format video is essentially dead on YouTube. Very few people are making long videos anymore because they just don't get the views, and there is so much effort that goes into producing them, as you well know. Workshop Companion is actually an excellent example of this, look at...

    Its ok?

ITS are reputable, one of the biggest power tool companies in the country now after Folkestone Fixings went into administration, ITS actually bought FFX’s domain shortly after. Generally a little more expensive than other suppliers though.

Is there such a thing as 'cheap' paring chisels!

I’ve seen home-made examples made from discarded planer knives before. As @Blackswanwood said, a router plane would be a better choice for cleaning housings.

    Imgur Blocking UK Users

I was looking at an old thread of mine over on UKW and interestingly, all the images are visible, and I definitely uploaded all those images to Imgur and hyperlinked them into the thread. It appears they're uploaded to "ImageArchive.com", must've been something they did when they took over.

Kity 619 table saw rise and fall repair

Kity machines are a nightmare to work on because they cram so much into a compact package. I had a hell of a time replacing the bearings in my Kity 623 spindle moulder when I had it.

How The Spindle Moulder Gained Its Notoriety

Yes, some of the tenoning equipment gets very large! The Whitehill HP flush window tooling is 325mm in diameter on a 125mm tall stack, definitely not for the faint of heart on startup.

How The Spindle Moulder Gained Its Notoriety

It's nice that people still read these old threads, shame that the photos have fallen victim to the Imgur UK block. While I've been using circular cutter blocks like the older Whitehill and Wadkin blocks for years, I've actually started messing with square blocks for a bit of fun lately...

A champion of the collecting world.

I wonder if anyone would be interested in my book collection when I eventually throw a rod. Over a hundred books dedicated to Carpentry and Joinery, and then another hundred or so books and catalogues on Woodworking Machinery, and always collecting more!

    Startrite table saw - purchase?

The Startrites are OK, they're obviously a budget machine of their time, but very simple and dependable compared to today's budget stuff. I'm pretty sure that's the 145, so it takes a 9" blade and gives you about 3" rip depth. Personally, I would rather a 12" saw, but seldom do most people find...

    Diminished (gunstock) stile door

    Beautiful work 👏

    Simple door

It does hold a door straighter and more firmly, for most typical internal applications it is overkill, but it's required on fire doors. Often, the third hinge will be placed only 8" below the top hinge on a fire door, which I personally think is wrong as if the door warps from a fire, the third...

    The Accidental Woodworking Club

Square of Thales is a bit dull unless you've got a use for one. It's certainly interesting if you've got experience under your belt beforehand, but I imagine for the average hobbyist it's a bit 'out there'. Roy Sutton used to produce footstools with complete beginners in machine work, quite...
