• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Not wishing to drag David's thread any further off line here are the only pictures of my 2CV I can find with me in them.
This was 35 years ago. Me and a mate ( I was the only driver) drove it down to St Tropez and back over a 3 week period in the summer of 1980. I do not recall ever having a problem with visibility. Maybe the upholstery in the seats was knackered.


It was not a heavy car I could even hold it's weight on my shoulders while changing an indicator bulb :D


Note the slope on the campsite. We had to choose our pitch very carefully as due to a knackered battery we had to push start the car every day for the whole trip. Yes it had a starting handle but I never got the hang of starting it cold.

Well I only stand about 6' in my clogs but I also drove a 2CV for a number of years, I think I run up ~100,000 miles across two different cars. One of which went from Essex to the north of Scotland twice, with a rack on the back with a pair of mountain bikes strapped on.
I also used it to carry the sound system for the Ceilidh band I was the sound man for. I used to take out the back seat and then I would stow the following, it had to go in the correct order or it did not fit.
Sound desk in flight case, Bass guitar and amp, 4 4*12 cabinets for the PA, amp boxes 2 1kwatt for the front of house and 100watt for the back line, 6 small back line speakers, lead box that matched the drummers box for weight and the stands for all the cabinets.
The bass man also travelled with me as well. The best gigs where in proper barns that I could drive up the the stage to unload, the worst in a hall on the second floor and no lift.

I had a great deal of fun with my 2CVs, sad to see them go, but I now drive a Volvo V50 that does more to the gallon than they used to, in much more comfort.
 
I drove the length of Africa in 1994/ 95 , including crossing the rainforests of Cameroun, Central African Republic and Zaiire (as was). To do this, we were in 2 serious 4x4's, and Zaiire alone took nearly 4 weeks to cross, averaging 30 miles a day slogging through mud, holes in the "road" deeper than the car, log bridges (many of which we had to repair ourselves), and so on. It was really hardcore stuff. You can picture my astonishment, then, when we bumped into a couple of guys in a 2CV, who had recently done the exact same route as us.

Now, this was bog standard 2CV, with the lumps of rubber for suspension, road tyres, and an engine the size of a lawn-mower. Impossible, I said. The guys pointed at the corners of the car, where they had welded some short bits of steel tubing. Whenever they came to an obstacle, they simply pushed wooden handles into the pipes, got a couple of locals to help, and standing one at each corner they simply carried the vehicle across! I had one for a while and can't say I was enthralled by it, but it may come as no surprise that HM Royal Marines used them as transport in Singapore...or so my old dad told me when he was there in the 60's on board the Ark Royal (the proper one, not the toy HMG have just junked) - Rob

I drove a friends one once - just couldn't get the hang of the gear lever.

This is the only photo I could find with me in the 2CV. The blue line is where I estimate the top of the windscreen to be and you can see where my eyeline is.
Not sure this really shows the problem with any certainty but it was only a few 10s of km but not a comfortable drive.

Mark , I pity you . That's all I'm saying . But where were you when I needed you in ASDA last week , having not seen any ginger nuts for over a month , I spied a box on the top shelf out of reach , had to wait for a tall bloke to pass by so I could ask him to get them down . I was at a wedding reception in Froyle Park a couple of weeks ago , there was a guy there who is about 6'8" , he had to duck down when moving from one room to another , nearly spilt my gin laughing .
