• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

A VERY big glulam

At the CSP Limoges match last night, the glulam supporting the stadium roof caught my eye :

The use of a glulam in Mike's project has made me more aware of them. I dont know what sort of sizes they can go up to, but this looks pretty big to me !
 
Yebbut Mike's aren't held together with Duct Tape :lol:

part of CrossRail - was made from glulam beams and the only company in the world who could make them was located in Austria. You should see the size of their planer :o They are joined with metal junctions and the whole thing was down to mm tolerances. The station spans a road and they are having a garden on this bit. So to plan for this when they built the station they pre-loaded the spans over the road with concrete and then when it was finished, they removed the concrete...the spans moved up...they installed the garden, earth and all, the span went back to the right level.
 
Yeah, that Crossrail terminal is a great building. I watched a long documentary on it some while back.........and most of the construction is actually in the river (built in a huge caisson).

I mentioned in another thread that I have a Grand Designs type project on the drawing board (oh yeah!) right now. Well, it is based on 5 massive glulams, one a big circle, and the other 4 curved in both plan and elevation. I'll let you know on progress. But when i say "massive", I mean on a domestic scale, not the size of that stadium.
