• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I teach English in Germany for a living. Having discussed food with them yesterday, my students said that they wouldn't mind trying a bit of English cheese, so I went to the local supermarket which happens to have Wensleydale with bits of apricot in it. I duly brought that into work this morning ... but there was no knife to cut the plastic wrapping open!

As it happens, one of the students had trained as a joiner in a previous life and I'd coincidentally brought my Veritas LAJ in to show him. Then the light went on: planes have detachable blades and they are extremely good at cutting open and cutting up pieces of Wensleydale.

And what do we learn from this? Always but always, make sure that you have a hand plane in your rucksack. You never know when it will come in use.
 
Put the blade back in and you could have sliced the cheese thinly...... :lol:

I've come across a few plane irons that could be described as having the edge holding of a piece of cheese, but never cut any with one - nice lateral thinking. Once made a saw that got used to cut, iirc, a cake, but don't know if that from a lack of available cake knife or just because. Infinitely useful things, hand tools. Often think it's ironic that for years I used to hanker after owning a MicroPlane rasp, but only finally got one when I found myself exiled from the workshop and confined to the kitchen. They call it a zester there.
 
I guess that means that you don't carry a knife. Not many people do, but unless I'm going somewhere I know there will be security I ALWAYS have a Swiss army knife in my pocket, even around the house. Then I have a rather nice Sheffield made knife which is in my bag when I'm out and about.
