• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I made this for my granddaughter - it's a traditional style baby's rattle with three captive rings made from a piece of walnut. It's finished with (safe for toys) Liberon Black Bison paste wax :

and here's my granddaughter unwrapping her present. The joy of giving!

We’ve still got toys I made nearly 50yrs ago still being used by my Grandchildren - Ruby aged 3.
Wooden toys last much longer than plastic stuff.

Thanks gents! The baby rattle is proving to be a big hit, I'm told.

I made one for my grandson a couple of years ago and he loved his too. Fun to make. I love making stuff for my kids' families. I'll have to get started on more Christmas tree decorations soon!

Nice job; never tried to do a 'captive ring'...tricksy or what, special tool/techinque? How about an 'old skool' football rattle for a proper ear bending? - Rob

Thanks! My "special" captive ring tool is a length of 6mm HSS round bar in a home-made handle with the end bent at right angles and sharpened like a mini skew, which is used to part the rings once they are shaped. One of the guys at our club gave a demo a while ago and I was able to check out the tool he'd made. The rest is just spindle work with a small spindle gouge. Like everything, it just takes practice.

I like the rattle it is the old design, which would not be allowed now due to the handle being too small in diameter. Elf and safety gone made again.

Thanks Paul, Malc and Derek!

I've made three of these for different babies and the funny thing is, babies have no concept of what a handle is and all three prefer to shake theirs by the other end!
