• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I'd noticed that my dashboard was showing a slightly different symbol indicating when the next service was due (6kmiles) - the cars picture now has a yellow line round it.

Then today I got this email:

"We have recognised that your vehicle will be due for a service soon. Unfortunately we do not have a record of your preferred BMW Approved Centre. The TeleServices system in your vehicle is able to send messages directly to your preferred Centre whenever the car is due a service, they will then contact you to arrange an appointment. If you would like to use this feature, please reply to this email letting me know where you would like to have the vehicle serviced in the future."

It's coming up to two years old so I suppose it's due for a brake fluid change?

A bit spooky though?

Indeed - how long before they stop working until you have it serviced, or go into limp mode on the grounds of 'safety'? Most cars already have warning/hazard symbols for service intervals that can only be removed by a mechanic (in the case of my Citroen it had to be a main dealer). Customer data has become a valuable commodity. Articles today about facebook introducing a 'dislike' button suggest the value in this is in targeting future advertising - if facebook knows you dislike subject X, it will target the opposite of X at you, rather than only being able to target the opposite of X at people who 'like' the opposite of X.

The answer is to walk everywhere and not be on facebook - I manage to do at least one of these!

How about sending back an email saying:
"Have my car send the service message directly to me. My local BMW Service Center is a total putz, whereas my local mechanic is an inexpensive hero."

Note that they don't want to tell you that your car needs service, they want to cut out the guy who will do that service for half the price.

I don't really have a choice Kirk as the car is still under warranty and has to be serviced by a BMW garage.
Also I paid for servicing up front but annoying it wasn't until I took delivery of the car that I found that the first service was to be in 17k miles.
I think this will be an intermediate service to change brake fluids at the end of October when it's 2 yrs
Every time I start up it tells me on the dash when the next service is due ( 6k at the moment) and I'm pretty sure it will tell when the miles have clocked up that the service is now due - this system is new in that it seems the garage rings me to arrange a booking?

Rod,
I think they have changed the rules on exclusive servicing to maintain warranty a good few years ago but main dealers don't tell you that of course!

Provided the servicing is done to the manufacturers schedule and using approved parts/consumables and the garage is a registered business (normally taken to mean VAT registered), then the warranty is deemed to be maintained.

On Friday the Car Symbol on switch-on came up red (even though it says 6k to next service).
On interrogating the computer it's due an oil change (that mustn't count as a service?).

Haven't heard from the Garage yet, so perhaps this telemetry takes some time? [emoji3]

Maybe they don't make enough out of an oil change and so will leave it until the lack of an oil change causes more a more profitable package of work.

As VW has taught us recently all sorts of things can be achieved with software - mainly to advantage of the dealer/manufacturer it seems!

It turns out to be a 1st service - oil, filter and micro filter change. I'm drinking a coffee with a nice Border biscuit whilst it's being done [emoji4]
Still cannot understand why it was saying 6k miles to go but perhaps a time thing too?
Brake fluids not changed until 3yrs now.
Inquired about Stop/Start function - was told only Driving Instructor cars can be amended!!
Still pursuing it though.

Just before they came to tell me the car was ready, I was sent a video of the cars inspection whilst up on the ramps.
Latest gimmick? [emoji3]
