• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

My brother is after some remedial woodwork from me after leaving a wet keg on his oak table

It has reacted and left a black ring. I've not used it but am I right in thinking the best approach would be oxalic acid? Would you try sanding first? I imagine the stain will be fairly deep and it's not worth attempting?

It depends how much of a task stripping the rest of the top is. If it wouldn't be too difficult to re-finish, then I'd try a scraper, a plane, and/or a belt sander, or hand sanding. You'll have to remove a reasonable amount of material (say a couple of shavings thick).

Oxalic acid will work, but maybe not 100% perfectly. Don't forget to neutralise afterwards. And you're still left with the task of re-finishing.

I assumed it was going to be a lacquer finish being from John Lewis, but looking at the current model it mentions oiling so maybe not so bad on the refinishing front! I'll go round with plane, scraper and ROS, don't have a belt sander and see if it touches it.

You'll soon see if it's oil.........clogged sanding discs!
