• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Some already know, but for those that don't, when I started working at my new place a few years ago I had access to a Prototrak cnc lathe and mill. No one else used them, so I got given the keys and told to help myself :)

One of the things I decided to do as my learning project was a chess set. I actually made 2 - one for the display case at work and one for myself.

My set has sat in the garage since I brought it home, so I decided to give it to the son of one of my very good friends.

About 18 months ago I gave him a board and set of draughts (turned from steel and brass). Every few months my friend sends me a photo of his boy using it, generally titled something along the lines of 'Still being used'. (Very heart warming if I'm honest haha).

His son is now 11 or 12, so figured he might like to progress from draughts.

(The chess set is actually powder coated aluminium. I sent it away to be anodized, but the made such an awful job of it I took it to the local paint shop and asked them to cover it up).

And the draughts

I remember you posting the chess pieces, those draughts I had not seen before. Unusual, unique and great boxes too.

That is really nice! I have been toying with making a chess board recently for my son's birthday but no way could I make pieces like that to go with it!

Thanks guys :)

Steve - the pieces are fairly easy - except the knight. It took maybe a week or so to design, program and make all the other ones, but the knight took a long, long time to figure out. Not that difficult to design, but trying to figure out workholding (for a novice like me) was a nightmare.
