• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I'm thinking of a project (yes, Mr Nevergetaroundtodoingought has another project )
I want to display a Bog Oak "Little Billy" plane and have it rotating on, preferably, nothing bigger than 40mm diameter.
What do you reckon?
Cheers,Andy

Wouldn't you just buy a normal turntable, strip off the big circular table, and replace it with a small table?

Perhaps a bit more information will highlight my predicament.
I'm hoping to bore out the end of a 4" diameter log and insert the turntable flush to the surface of the end grain.
Another piece of timber will also be mounted upon the same surface to create a backdrop, hence the diminutive turntable requirement.
Cheers, Andy

Right, so get an old battery-powered drill, and strip it. Mount the motor inside the log, with the chuck still attached. Either wire in the battery, or get hold of a transformer and wire it to that. Make a mini turntable using a bit of wood and a bolt, and mount that in the chuck. Set the speed to the lowest possible, and away you go.

This might do the job

I like your thinking Mike but unfortunately it is not a very big log and 1/2" needs to be taken off the top leaving me approximately 3 3/4"20240813_075901.jpg

Microwave turntable motor should be ideal.
Damn and blast, I knew I should have kept those old microwaves...
I don't think I have ever seen a microwave motor Bob, looking at the log would you be able to fit it in?

Interesting, could it be slowed right down to say 2 or 3 rpm ?
I don't have a target speed but something sedate is preferable.
I wonder if overheating could become an issue with any suitable unit?

They do list another motor that gets down to about 4.5 rpm, whole range here including sub miniature

If you are looking for really sedate what about a clock motor and mount the disc to the shaft for the second hand. Think you could add a switch inline with the battery fairly easily
