• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Many of us took out an email address with Demon Internet in 1992 in the heady days of the internet. They were the original 'Tenner a month'. Since then Demon Internet have been sold on from company to company. Throughout all these moves, our email addresses have remained unchanged.

The format of the email address was brilliant anything@xxxxxxx.demon.co.uk
I effectively 'owned' xxxxxxx which meant that I could instantly put anything in front of the @ sign. Great for anonymity. Great for signing up for all sorts of things where they blocked you if you had registered before using the same email address.

My actual email address is registered with countless companies, e-commerce sites, you name it. I can't even begin to think where they all are.

Now, Vodafone have sold us to NamesCo. No notification. Nothing. Quite by chance, I discovered that they were going to start charging for my website hosting. No notification. Bastards.

But it gets worse. Buried in the Demon website is the little known fact that within two years, we are all going to lose our Demon email address. :evil: :evil: :evil: I've had that email address for over twenty years. It's almost a part of me. I have a strong emotional attachment to it.

I can't even begin to think of where or on what sites my email address is registered. To say that I am hacked off is an understatement.

And you can guess which company is top of my s**t list.

Yes, seems the mighty VF care more about shareholders and asset stripping everything they lay their hands on. (emphasis on the a$$)

My company work with them and they are the polar opposite of a delight to work with.

Yeah a real bummer. I have had email address with Yahoo since the late 90s and I would also be a tad upset if they disappeared.
 
that is a shame. I also had a demon account....they were the doyenne of the internet at their time weren't they.

I really cant bear corporate bully boys either...may their ludicrously over priced car crash into their hideously bad taste yacht!!!

That fails User Requirement 1 - anonymity!!

Any email addresses like Google also fails User Requirement 1 and 2 !!

But as Bob has suggested, I now have my own domain which is effectively my old email address minus one . Now to amend 25538499 websites that have the original. :evil:

OK..I jest but there are an awful lot.

Actually NamesCo are headquartered just down the road. I think a visit to see the MD might be in order.
 
I had notice of losing a much used email address a couple of years ago.

I created a rule to put all mail from that address into a folder. Any new mail in that folder reminded me to change whatever I was signed up to... assuming it wasn't spam of course.

i was never with demon. My first ISP was called dircon. they were bought by Netscalibur I think and then Clara. I still have the sign up letter 23/08/1995 when i first got on line at 56k for £10 a month.

I pay £20 a year for my own Uk domain with web space and email. The domain email is now the one I use most so if i ever change ISP it doesn't matter.
 
Yes, shame ! I had a demon account right from the start too, kept it till I left for France in '99.

I seem to remember that the founders sold the business for around £50M at the end of the 90's, not bad for less than 10yrs work.

As for now, I do as Robert does, I have my own domain with the email syncd to MS Outlook and can change ISP any time without changing the address. Costs me around £50/an.
 
Finally done it all. Nearly forgot all the software licences I'd bought over the years and seem to be tied into my email address.

All done. No more xxxxxx.demon.co.uk after end of June.

It's a great opportunity to 'lose' contact with those you don't wish to stay in contact with !
 
Ah, a couple of Gotcha's I'd like to flag up.

1) If you have an item for sale on eBay then any PayPal email address associated with that item for payment will have your old email address - even though you might have changed it with PayPal

2) If you are a Mac user then use Keychain access and type in your old email address in the search box. That will flag up all the saved usernames etc and so act as an aide-memoire for you to scan down to see if there are any websites or forums etc that you've forgotten. Sorry - I don't know if there is the equivalent on PCs
