• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Spamming e-mails from facebook, how do I stop them?

I made the fatal mistake many years ago of going to look at facebook and creating an account. Huge mistake! :evil:
Then the mails started!!!

“You have 8 friends waiting to connect to you”

“Do you know the following people ……… “ (somewhere they are picking up the names from e-mails that I send?) and also people that I have never heard of.

There are at least two of these mails daily.

So what/how do I stop and disconnect to this facebook c r a p?

I don't do facebook. Well I suppose I do indirectly as my wife is all over it.

Making your life public to that degree has never sat right with me. Sharing pictures and talking about things going on it life all sounds great but so much other stuff leaks out and you have to be careful which group can see it... then what if a friend shares too much.. I can't bring myself to do it.

I took out a facebook account in a made up name with a email address I don't normally use and looked at peoples I knews pages. So many I could see so much info on and also a few that were locked down and not visible. Easy to work out who was on holiday and where they lived for example.

I don't get mail because i used a throw away googlemail address. Can't you get a new email address then change the facebook email to it? you usually have to confirm a change so you need to have a real account you can reply on.
 
You can , but I forget how , remove your whole account from facebook. Like you I got fed up with the spam mail so I closed the account.
 
I quite like FB and if you connect to the right people, there's an awful lot of nice woody stuff on there. Brian (Modernist on UKW) started an excellent project-only forum (basically because nobody make anything substantial on UKW any more) where Scandi-modern furniture (and others) can be viewed. It's also a good way to keep in touch with people and make 'friends' :roll: with new woody people, especially in the US, where it's interesting to see their 'take' on stuff…f'rinstance, would you drink a decent, well hopped, strong ale ice cold, straight out the freezer? I only joined farcebook under pressure from (younger) family members and got totally sick of all the "do you know this person" type emails.
With multiple attempts at adjusting my preferences I've got it down to a stage where is it very rare indeed to hear from them.

I will go in over the weekend and see if there is a delete function, else go the route of Robert. I do have an old e-mail address still live before I moved to Gmail about 9 years ago.

The other pain in the butt is Linkedin - also big spammer

Like several others have mentioned, I've kept clear of FB for the reasons outlined. However, I'm sure there is good stuff to be found - maybe one day I'll open an account and devote the time needed to configure it for trouble and spam free use. Any hints ?
 
Yes I agree, I had to join LinkedIn when I was working.
Facebook I'm a member but do not use to communicate

Hell yes, I'd drink that beer. Especially on a hundred degree day.:)

Only 28C here according to the Met Office Forecast. No idea what it is the ward but we've got very expensive Dyson Cool Fans going full blast?

How on earth can the NHS justify the cost of those Dyson fans. I had at first wondered if you were in a private hospital but looking at the IP address being logged for you, it links to Winchester and Eastleigh NHS trust.

I hope things are 'on the move' for you Rod.

…and therein lies the difference. In the UK it's unknown to drink beer straight from the freezer, especially something like a well hopped, strong Pale Ale. Larger or pilsner is usually drunk cold, or well chilled but again, never out the freezer cabinet. I remember once I flew into Toronto and fancied a beer once the aircraft had landed. I found my way to a bar and was confronted with a row freezer cabinets behind the bar…the bottled beer I was served was totally without taste, it was just a freezing cold liquid. Coming from the UK, where I was used to pints of real ale served at room temperature, the experience was one that was strange, to say the least - Rob

As far as facebook is concerned, I've never felt the need to sign up - primarily because I have no interest whatsoever in other people's lives. It's probably saved me some annoyance.
Rob - a good well hopped strong ale straight from the freezer? Sounds wonderful to me! :D
 
There's quite a few decent beers in the States and Canada if you look around and quite few microbreweries popping up.
But the run if the mill stuff is pretty bland to our tastes.

We've always been a joke with others about our warm beer but it isn't really served that way nowadays if you go to a decent pub?
Last year I was collecting for Charity at the Winchester Beer Festival - rows and rows of lovely beers,ales and porters to choose from!
The Charity did quite well after a few hours when the booze had kicked in! :)

If it serves ale that's been chilled it isn't (in my view at least Rod) a 'decent' pub…send the ale back and find a pub where the landlord knows his job - Rob
 
Bob most of the fans are bought from gifts and donations.

My daughter's ward was given £1500 recently by a grateful patient to buy some.

Apart from being very efficient, they are considered much safer as they have no revolving blades and much easier to clean.
Would love some at home but sadly they cost about £250!

You probably had a Labatt's. The US isn't the only place with canoe beer.:)

The correct temp. of ale and wine is cooler than is generally understood. Red wine is said to be best served (with the odd exception) at room temp. ... but that was when room temp was about 15c -16c. before the advent of central heating. Similarly when it was said that ale/beer was not to be chilled, it was presumed to be coming from a proper cellar - which would be at about 12c - certainly not "room temperature" as we understand it today. Obviously it would be warmer if "straight out" on the back of a bar.
Personally, I can't stand warm beer of any type - and I was a cellar man for 25yrs. I did draw the line at 2c lager in NZ - I think if you downed a pint in one, it would probably hospitalise you. It was lovely five minutes later, mind.
Kirk- I didn't look but I assume canoe beer is what we know as "making love in a punt".

I gave up with facebook. Each time I went on it had changed and I couldn't get where I wanted to be. I kept getting the e mails stating there was a new message for me and all it turned out to be was someone inviting me into a game! :roll: Ain't got time for all that pointless chatter. :roll:

Seeing that we moved quite off topic to booze ................ :D

I have a wooden cupboard in the garage where I keep my beer supply. Can get 10 cases of cans in it.

So I drink it off the shelf, even in summer. In winter when really cold, the beer is nearly too cold to drink.

Cans? Well I had some bad experience years ago where the bottles in the 6 pack were leaking and empty. They were screw top bottles. The cans are also easier to re-cycle than bottles. Just flatten the can and chuck in box ready for the re-cycle people.

Many many years ago I used to "lay" wine down in my garage. Big mistake as I had to chuck most of it away - the temperature difference between winter and summer inside there, killed it off :( Big, black, flat roof with no insulation.
Now store my good stuff at my daughter's place who has a cellar under her dining room.

As I think I mentioned, after Steve Maskery's workshop essentials email address got hijacked by a spammer, he seemed to have got blacklisted (at least with my email provider Demon). So all his emails to me were getting bounced. The funny thing is that his gmail emails also got bounced so how or why the two got connected I have no idea unless it's his IP related.

Anyway to get round the problem, Demon suggested that they switched off their spam filter on my incoming emails which I agreed to and, lo, Steve's emails came through. And a little bit of spam. So I set up a few rules in Mail to automatically delete the ones I could. All good then, I thought. Wrong!! Went away for a day to come back to find 120 emails of which 60% were spam. Moreover, many of them had PC viruses enclosed which were then trapped by Sophos. Which then inhibited my backup program from running.

So today I asked Demon to turn it back on. Really goes to show just how good some email providers are at keeping spam out of your inbox long before it gets to you.
 
Virginmedia (aka Google mail) spam filter is excellent. It extracts and holds spam mail for 30 days.
My folder typically has between 400 and 900 mails in it so that is an average of 13 to 30 perday.

Very rarely do they get it wrong. Certainly a lot better when I had my own local filter and spent ages training it and it still was less effective.

Bob, I agree with you on the Google filter. I check the spam box regularly to see if there are any legit mails and then move them.

I use a Hotmail account when first subscribing to E-Letters or any business related contacts, and when happy they are not spamming, move them to Gmail.

As carl pointed out just check the e-mail box, done! I'm similar to Rob, 99.9% of my friends are woodworking friends. Inspiration and contact with others you might not be able to reach is fun. I did have a personal account years back but seeing other peoples lives was like seeing a badly edited version on East Enders, no thanks :lol: I'm glad to be past my teens & 20's. Having "fun" during those years seems so freely shared these days along with very personal issues. I prefer to keep things a bit more private.

I am a very private sort of person and see absolutely no reason to start publishing my private life to the whole world.

You can also set your profile to private and not searchable on fb. That way only you can add people and you can't be found during a search for your name. :)
