• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

food for thought

Some rather dubious claims in there eg 54 biomarkers predicting disease and electric cars becoming the norm from 2020. Go back 20 years and look at predictions then for now (or look at any episode of Tomorrow's World!) and see how many came to fruition. Will the world change in 20 years - of course, can we predict how with any degree of certainty - nope!

Some experts are already saying that battery powered vehicles is not the answer but fuel cells is.

Have you seen the new petrol engine from Mazda? Intriguing. Fuel cells are not the answer.

Personally I think less driving is the answer to that particular problem.
 
I'm pretty certain that battery power alone is not the answer.

A few back of envelope calcs show that the power needed to provide the degree of comfort cooling and heating that we have become used to (and currently demand) will consume 2 to 3x the power used for traction and that is even if they use reversible heat pumps for heating.

I have a small side bet with myself that the 2040 date for ending petrol and diesel vehicles will become modified to allow some form of hybrid vehicles.

You could be right Steve. I only took my interpretation from the news headlines and assumed hybrids would be out as they (usually) use diesel or petrol for the auxiliary power.

EDIT: Having dug around on t'web, I see that the proposal is that hybrids will be allowed to be sold after 2040.
 
Petrol stations will disappear eventually just like the coal man, it's just a matter of time. Kids born in the not too distant future will laugh at the concept of paying good money to actually buy a car and keep it parked outside your house unused 90% of the time.

ALL CARS sold in the UK from 2040 will be electrified, the government has announced, in a bid to remove “conventional” diesel and petrol vehicles from our roads.

Reports yesterday stated that even hybrid vehicles, including those that plug in, would be banned under the plans, but the Department for Environment and Rural Affairs later told Autocar that hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles meeting emissions regulations will still be allowed under.

I must admit I thought the ban included Hybrids when I read it.

I don't see why they couldn't develop clean petrol hybrids though. Surely the engine could be quite small?
 
It was from a couple of newspaper reports I found on the web - so could be wrong.
The BMW i3 can be supplied with a very small petrol engine (0.6l 2 cylinders) which extends its range from 240km to 300 but reading actual independent road tests it achieves much less.
One version of the new Tesla is supposed to have a 300mile range,

That's pretty poor isn't it. They've got to pull their finger out if they're going to compete with Tesla.

I agree. As Andy says, where is the electricity going to come from?

My favourite technology is hydrogen power, with zero emissions. I believe that Nissan have given their hydrogen technology away to all of the other vehicle producers. All that has to be cracked now, is how hydrogen is produced using (much) smaller amounts of electricity.

During my 250 mile (each way) trips to Yorkshire recently we stopped a few times at the service stations with hundreds of other cars.
The sheer logistics of many, many cars having to top up their batteries for an hour or so I just cannot comprehend. Also not everyone has a garage or parking space at their home - how do they recharge? Just think of all the cars parked in car parks at anyone time with lots looking for a refill - the mind boggles.
My local, very large Sainsbury's has only 2 charging points and a hotel we stayed at had two also - with everybody switching from hydrocarbons this requirement will be impossible to meet. They will have to continue to allow hybrids

Rod whose current diesel car has a range of 600 miles.
 
It's simple Rod, they will just build charging points into all major parking areas as it becomes more prevalent, then they will charge for their use, like pay & display car parks.

Yeah - like that won't be expensive to offset the governments loss of tax on fuel.... 2040 suddenly seems bit bit optimistic when you consider the likely infrastructure requirements. A bigger question mght be can we build/maintain the power stations necessary to generate that much lecky in the first place - Hinkley Point C is getting more and more delayed and more and more expensive. Would be rather ironic to build a coal fired power station to meet the demand for cleaner transport ;)

Exactly and I do not think the public has the appetite for more nuclear power stations nor a countryside/coastline covered in wind farms.

Rather than give subsidies to the public for such things why does the government not install solar lecky panels and solar heating system on all public buildings.
