Funky Display Cabinet.

Evening All.

I mentioned in another post last night about a small oak bookcase I recently made and delivered to an existing client. Here's the groovy little number...

This little fella is now sat in the client's hallway up against a wall - with nothing above. The client said she would now like a display cabinet to show off her cool collection of dragons, so I suggested making one to go above the newly made small bookcase, maintaining a quirky design and perhaps incorporating the style - not forgetting the dragons. She was now very excited about the prospect of having a quirky wall mounted display cabinet.

I've just emailed these to her and now waiting for her response.

Maybe if your clients don't have sufficient books, then it will make the wall look reasonably used.

This display cabinet is for the purpose of displaying a variety of dragon statues. A pair of walking boots are definitely a no-goer with this work. :lol:

You're never too old to acquire artistic tendencies - even if it's the occasional flicker of the light bulb.

Cheers Mark. Well, a decision has been made and it's #01 excluding the 'dingly-dangly' bits - as the client called them. Not so funky afterall :|

My client phoned me this morning and for the last few days, she's apparently been torn between 'funky' and being sensible/practical. I totally understand.

With this dilemma, the sensible got the better of her and she's made a decision. She would like me to make Design 01 but without the 'dingly-dangly bit's as she called them.

I've since prepared a revised drawing and here it is...

It's still a pretty cool cabinet and she's probably right with her decision.

I'm also going to be making this little stick/umbrella stand as well.

I shall start a WIP as soon as...

Only just catching up with this. Looking forward to the WIP, but I think a mistake by the client. I am sure the cabinet will be nice, but they will end up with a funky unit below and a relatively much more conservative one above. Personally I do not think they will work together.

Cheers Terry, I kind of agree with you and I would have liked to make all the dingly-dangly bits for this one, but I understand where my client is with it. I would liked to have made 03 or 04.

Update:

Since demoting my mobile phone from a smart phone to a 'builder's phone' (the CAT B100), I don't have a very good camera anymore. I do use the iPad sometimes (especially for finished photos), but Mrs P uses this a lot and I wouldn't want to upset her by pinching it everyday. So, the following pictures are a bit grainy.

The display cabinet is 300mm deep and here are the tops and bottoms of the cabinets in glue-up. These boards are 2/20x170mm glued together.

Here's the lower part of the umbrella stand ready for assembly - excluding the base.

And here it is cleaned up with the base in place.

Here, we have the upper part of the umbrella stand on the left, with the display cabinet on the right; including the frames already made (not cleaned up at this stage) and the tops/bottoms cut to depth and length.

This is an idea of what the display cabinet is going to look like. Each piece is just leaning against each other.

And here's the display cabinet all marked out for biscuit jointing.

Occasionally, I make little clamping devices as and when needed. This one is ideal for biscuit jointing this cabinet.

1st bit - a bit of MDF with some old wood screw fixed to the underside.

In the vice...

Work piece now securely & safely in place for cutting.

Job done.

Same for the frames...

And now, here's the middle cabinet of the display cabinet in glue assembly.

Plus, the upper part of the umbrella stand.

Update:

Today, I glue assembled the side cabinets of the display cabinet and the upper part to the umbrella stand.

I may have mentioned in previous threads about being organised prior to a glue assembly. I pretty much always carry out a dry assembly before glue-up and this is one of my favourite parts of the job - glue assembly.

Here's everything ready to go...

I've also attached some of my protective blocks using market stall clamps, making the sash clamp work much easier when assembling.

And here's the display cabinet glued up - excluding the rear frames.

I then got on with the umbrella stand. Here's the upper part of the stand in place. Just need to clean it up, make sure it sits right and mark/cut for the biscuits. Notice the e-fag (well, more of an e-pipe) on the bench - love it. I'm vaping vanilla custard & black cherry - bloody lovely!

And here's the upper part glued onto the base. I've cantilevered it over the corner of the bench to get a good steady bit of clamping - just the jobby. I've also machined a small chamfer detail to the top edges only, giving a neat shadow gap in line with (or will be) the underside of the railing.

Update:

After making the rear frames, I fitted them to the display cabinet. I had to form a stopped rebate to interlock all 3 frames together, giving an equal appearance from the face side.

Here are the rear frames in glue assembly.

And fitted to the cabinet.,,

This photo is the back of the cabinet. The mirrored glass will be installed from the back into the newly formed rebates.

I've also included a chamfer detail which will give a small shadow gap detail when fitted to the wall - nice.

Here's the front of the cabinet.

These little fellas are to form the railing detail on the umbrella stand.

Update:

Today, I focussed on the railing to the umbrella stand. These were quite tricky as I expected. Each piece is biscuit jointed to the carcase of the stand and also mitred to each other with concealed biscuits too. The glue assembly required a bit of prep work and after dry assembling everything, I locked myself in with a 'DO NOT DISTURB' (buxom blonde running around naked) sign in the door and glued up the top railing.

I needed the work to be sitting vertically for clamping, so I fastened a couple of timber bearers across a pair of stools using four G clamps and also secured the work to the bearers.

I had all the clamps, biscuits, timber pads, glue etc close to hand.

And glue assembled with pleasing results.

I'll clean this up tomorrow and then glue assemble the lower part of railing.

I know this little fella looks quite easy to make, but it has certainly been a tricky little chap! Photos aren't doing it justice, but fear not, I shall use the iPad for the finished pics.

I really like the umbrella stand - it's turned out very cool indeed, and the display cabinet is dandy.

Here, I made the 6mmsq glazing beads and cut them on the bench hook for their future resting places.

You can just about see them in place - obviously without the glass.

It's been a while since my last posting with this project - there was a delay with the glass. All is done now and I shall be delivering tomorrow, plus fixing the display cabinet to the wall.

Firstly, here's the umbrella stand which has been finished and sitting around in the shop for ages.

And here's the display cabinet. I couldn't shoot this in the shop because it needs to be on a wall and the mirrored backs will reflect the background. It weighs a ton!

I'll report back tomorrow with finished photos.
