• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Gauge blocks

I am trying to source some accurate metric bar to act as a thickness gauge. I would ideally like to be able to buy them individually with length not being too important - I guess 20cm or so but not critical. Thickness 4mm - 12mm. If I search for 'gauge blocks' I get engineering spec sets at eye-watering prices, and these are not square ie they are the specified thickness in only one dimension. I have a memory that there is a cheaper alternative and had it in my head these were called 'key ways' for locking pulleys onto spindles, but a search for 'key ways' doesn't find them - am I misremembering or do they have an alternative name does anyone know?

Alternatively, I could just purchase eg 6mm square bar from a metals supplier, but is this actually 6mm? I would be using them for spacing and gauging thickness in woodworking so do not need engineering tolerances, but would like consistency between different 'gauges'. I am particularly keen to use these for spacing my TS fence from my blade at these smaller measurements and for the fence on my router table from the cutter - this would be far more accurate than using a steel rule, which is my current method.

Anyone care to tell me what I am looking for is actually called?!

Steve
