• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hello All,

As the title says, I'm hooked on woodturning - did a little bit at school in the 60s and always had it in the back of my mind to give it a go when I retired.

Fast forward 50 years and here I am, a widower with all the little birdies flown the nest and a nice big concrete garage. Two years ago on my retirement, I emptied it of all the accumulated detritus of 35 years of family life (think "The Hoarder Next Door") and set up my man cave, based around a nice big lathe (originally a RP CL-1 but now an Axi AT1628VS), bandsaw (RP BS350S), radial arm pillar drill, sharpening system and a few other goodies. Oh, and LOTS of chisels ;) .

Now I spend most of my free time in there, happy as Larry.

I got some lessons when I started, which was a VERY good idea and may well have saved me from serious injury from misuse of turning tools. I've turned something like 200 items since then - bowls mainly but also hollow forms, vases, boxes, christmas decorations and of course the dreaded mushrooms.

I've given half of that output away - the early stuff not quite bad enough for nextdoor's woodburner to the charity shop, to family, friends and neighbours and even sold a few bits and pieces.

Here's a pic (sorry, crappy phone...) of what's left - with the (dearly departed and sorely missed) missus gone and the kids all left home the dining table never gets used, so it's a useful repository.

The first reaction from visitors is usually "Bl**dy hell!!"

Welcome to the forum :D

All good friendly people here, lots of knowledge here.

Hello Chap!

Sunny Bournemouth eh... my home town. The gardens, the trees, the beaches etc make Bournemouth what it is - just a shame about all those darn people! :P

There are some mighty fine turners on here who produce outstanding work (I'm not one of them) and I'm sure you'll have some great moments to share.

Enjoy!

:text-bravo:

Hi and welcome there are some nice pieces on the table. Come on in and post some more in the turning section as you make them.
I am sure if you had any questions some one with the knowledge will help you.

Nice to meet you as a beginner woodturner I will be following your posts intently
