• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

HMRC and mobile phones

I filled in a form online about topping up my contributions. A couple of months later I got a response by letter from HMRC saying, among other things, that they had sent my details to DWP. Then nothing. A month or so ago I thought I had better check so contacted DWP. They say they have never received anything from HMRC. Doesn't fill me with confidence. I hope I am now in the system/queue, but who knows when they give out false information.
Another reason I like the online chat is that the whole chat can be saved for future reference complete with the agents name just in case there is a future disconnect between DWP and HMRC. The agents I’ve spoken too are able to see our files and confirm that letters, payments and forms have been received. If I have not heard before then I will check with them every couple of months until I get the quote that confirms pension contributions are maxed out.
Incidentally dealing with the pensions service here is a lot easier as far as telephone contact is concerned but the whole process is a lot more bureaucratic, as you'd expect I guess.

I love HMRC, especially the time when, about 10 months into my new job I received only 50% of my monthly pay. Work said it was a tax code thing, HMRC said yes we changed your tax code to reflect your previous salary...

I log in and check and they have me on a 'D' code due not having paid enough tax the year before on my £206,000 salary!!!

I can assure everyone I've never held a role with quite that level of monetary recompense!

HMRC told me to claim it back from work. Work told me it didn't work that way and now the code had been changed they would see that and refund me next month.

I asked them both if they thought it was acceptable that I received only 50% of what I would normally take home and how was I going to live and pay my bills, Apparently it's not either of their fault/problem, it's mine to deal with!

On the plus side, HMRC did actually find that instead of them taking 50% of my salary, they should actually be paying me nearly £6k in overpaid taxes, which I received the following month, along with the 50% missing from the previous month.

I definitely felt wealthy that month!
