• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hi All,

I have come across this site whilst trying to work out my options on the above, so would appreciate any feedback on my venture, I'm not sure if this subject has been covered before ?
The building will be 12' x 10' with a Pent roof, inside will be an 8' x 4' x 4' (800 gallon capacity approx) quarantine tank, complete with filtration for new fish, but this will also be used to grow fish on, so I am focusing on the building being well insulated throughout, thereby reducing temperature fluctuations between Summer and Winter. I intend to heat the air, thereby reducing condensation, as heating the water creates more condensation ?

I intend to complete this project during late Winter / early Spring, as a self build, so have no immediate plans, but want to do it once, do it right !!!

My initial thoughts on the construction are as follows:

1. Visqueen DPC laid before a weld mesh 6" Concrete base.
2. Treated Wooden floor joists, laid in line with the tank. What section joists ? infilling between the joists with ? " insulation
3. 8" x 4" Ply flooring, either 3/4" or 1" thick.
4. 4" x 2" Stud walls, insulated between the studs with 4" Celotex of equivalent.
5. The interior walls will be covered with UPVC cladding.
6. Exterior walls will be covered with either Hardieplank, or something similar.
7. Insulated Pent roof, covered with heavy duty felt.

1 thing to note, the tank will sit on an 8' x 4' x 4" Celotex sheet to help with heat retention of the water, and the tank sides will also be insulated with 2" Celotex, maximising the insulation around the complete tank, the insulation will then be covered with cladding.

Other things I am considering are: no windows, using full spectrum LED Flourescent tubes for lighting, or 35 mm Clear Multiwall Polycarbonate sheeting for the roof, but am not sure this is a good idea as the building will be closeby to a Willow tree, come the autumn, the leaves will stick to the polycarbonate...high maintenance...

As you can see, I have some thoughts, but am looking for any feedback on my idea's or suggestions on the finer detail.
I'm an engineer by trade, so building this won't pose any problems, but want to get it right !! Thanks in advance for your replies, good or bad....

Clive.

Welcome to the forum :)

You do realise the price of advice will be a build thread with regular picture updates?

Not that I can offer much advice. I did notice that you mention 'heating the air' then go on to talk about insulating the tank surround - to keep the hot air away?

800 gallons weighs 3.5 tonnes according to a site I just found. No idea if that is right but the tank must be heavy if direct on insulation. Could it crush it?

More curiosity than for any potential help.. what kind of fish will you be keeping?

If you have looked round the site you will probably have noticed the spam trap moderation thing goes away after 3 posts.

I’d have thought a wooden floor would be unnecessary on top of the concrete slab especially as you are loading it with a tank.

To minimise heat loss from the water I think.

I'm going with Discus...

Welcome aboard Clive. I had a friend who did similar to what you are talking about here a few years ago. Unfortunately we are very much no longer friends otherwise I would have put you in touch. He bred Discus in a building like you describe which I helped him insulate. He too was an engineer and built a full filtration system with 32mm pipe etc.

Was warm as Hell in there!!

Look forward to seeing it come together.

Cheers
Mark

My vote is on Koi, if your a serious koi man you will quarantine and then ramp up the temp to stress the fishes immune system out to make sure your fish does not have KHV. If it gets into your main pond you loose everything.

Guys,

Thanks for your feedback, sorry for the delay in replying, i've been on a PC free holiday, back on it now though !!

Wallace wins guess the fish type.... Koi Carp. Previously I bought from 1 dealer only, who always quarantined his fish, so never doubted introducing disease into my pond, but unfortunately he is no longer dealing, hence me carrying this out myself.

Regarding feedback, I am trying to maintain a steady water temperature by insulating the tank, hence the insulation for it to sit on, a good point raised about not necessarily needing a wooden floor if placing the tank on insulation.
I asked a manufacturer of Quarantine tanks the question about 800 UK gallons squashing 4" insulation, the reply was it would squash the insulation a minimal amount, but as the weight is even across the surface area, it wouldn't be a problem. I would discuss this with the Insulation manufacturer before completing this.
The Temperature required for heat ramping will be 27 C.

Anybody aware of any specific projects to view for furthur info ?

Best wishes,

Clive. :D

Hi All,

Unfortunately my project has taken a back seat in recent month's, but should be starting to get back on track in the coming weeks...... whoop whoop !! The 10' x 12' base should be prepared and cast next week, constructed as a Raft slab as follows:

75mm cement
A142 Wire mesh
75mm cement
1200 gauge DPC
100mm Celotex Insulation
1200 gauge DPC

Could anyone point me to any builds that show the pictures / building of a Pent roof I could look at for method of construction. Also, does anyone have opinions on Hardieplank (other manufacturers are available) for the cladding ?

Thanks

Clive

Insulation. rather than Celotex (etc) I would instead use Dow-Floormate XPS (or similar).
Used in warehouse floors under concrete and can take a 4 ton Counter balance truck with 2 pallets of beer.
Would be able to work as a floating floor, with a suitably thick top surface.

Alex.
