• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

There seems to be a lot of people marketing their whatever shops as Atelier.
Is this a marketing thing to say I am better than the run of the mill shop?
 
Vaguely heard of it but to be honest I thought it was something to do with food, is it a local thing? Do you have a lot of Germans or Turks? It seems it’s more common to them.
I should stick with your honest no nonsense sign Scott.

I mean, obviously it's French for "workshop". Is it possibly something to do with increased Canadian nationalism in the face of Trump? I've no idea.

Apropos of nothing at all, the Spanish equivalent is "taller", which is pronounced something like "tie-yay".
 
I knew it's a French word and haven't seen it here much. Mostly on instagram accounts your way. Just noticed it being used more and more in the last six months.
 
I think an atelier is different to just being a workshop in that it encompasses design, manufacture and training of new artisans.

My understanding is based on the late David Savage’s blogs when he declared Rowdean to be an Atelier.

Used often in Quebec. Even though I live in a French Canadian heritage area I have yet to see it used.
Not many German and Turks, mainly people with Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and French heritage.

Yes that makes sense, but run of the mill handcrafted bowl, spoon makers etc. adopting it? Guess it implies a cut above others.
 
As said above, the more folk try to make something sound fancy, the more I grimace. "Atelier" implied "studio" to make things sound more creative/artsy... Clearly they are making "one-off" "Artisan" "creations" using "forward-thinking, organic inspiration" from "earth friendly" materials, "empowering" people to "express their spirit" in their "space"*

*painted MR-MDF CNC-cut b**locks fake Shaker-style gubbins, daubed in Little Greene Paint, (design copied from a "creator" on YouTube) so Gavin from Dagenham can laud it over his colleagues at Swetenhams, because he got ripped off even more brutally than the shysters at Neville Johnson, to put a very average cupboard in his lounge, for his Andy McNabb books, sold to him by a manicured git wearing neutral toned linen.

Language changes subtly over the years. Words go in and out of fashion. If you let it upset you, you'll be upset. The internet probably facilitates the more rapid evolution of language, but on the upside, it's also easier to find like minded people with whom to rant.

Great point re: semantic shift, and the observation about like-minded people. In fact I had to explain myself and the defintion of "dead" language precisely because of that.

Definitely much more important things to be affected by, I find it quite funny hence why I tried in my typically clumsy way to lampoon it :) I do, also watch some creators who, despite their predilection for green powdered drinks and VPN services, make some pretty impressive and inspiring furniture.

I bl**dy LOVE a good rant, but it's more as a pressure release valve to protect myself from taking these things too seriously.

The Zeitgeist PR/Marketing club are quick to react to trends... I remember "Millennium Windows"... "Millennium Joinery" et al.

Anyhow, I believe it's time for me to head off to the Sensory Depravation Studio to practice some Restful Horizontal Consciousness Projection....and drooling. :ROFLMAO:

I'd completely forgotten about sensory deprivation tanks! My wife and I did a session about 25 years ago - some sort of voucher deal, IIRC. We've never bothered repeating the experience (or lack of experience), so obviously didn't make much of an impression. Does that mean it was ultimately successful? I'm confused now.
