• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

They look really good. Do you have a link to the ukw thread. Any photos of installation in a workshop?

Cheers Roger, will take a peek. I like the idea of nearly flush and for that price, if the brightness and colour are good, I could get a LOT in the shop.

They don't look to be a staggering advantage over fluorescent tubes?

Fluorescent tube 58w 5400Lm = 93Lm/watt life 20000 hrs

Led Panel 48w 5000Lm = 104Lm/watt life 30000 hrs

Both get A+ efficiency ratings if they are to be believed

I cant find any information on the efficiency of the LED power supply module but maybe 90% so hardly anything to be saved on running costs.
So maybe more convenient, trendy and better light distribution but dearer initial cost.
Tube replacement much cheaper than replacement panels.

I've often wondered if there is an advantage of LED bulbs over CF too ?
 
To be honest once you have reasonable efficiency power conversion to get from mains voltage to whatever mix of volts and amps the light source needs there is not much efficiency gain to be had.

The energy input is simply making electrons jump about between different energy levels and making them emit light. Just down to basic fizzicks. Both leds and fluorescent tubes get gently warm as a result and not much more.

Basically if you can put your hand and hold it on a light source then virtually all your energy input is coming out as light and you won't improve on it.

Once you have taken running costs out of the equation comparison comes down to aesthetics, optical purity lifetime, capital and replacement costs some of which are hard to quantify.

I've just ordered some gu10 leds to replace 35w halogens in a set of 3 in a light fitting... most of our other light is CF

one day we'll catch up :-)

The ban on the manufacture of filament lamps is madness when the need for home heating is considered.

Hang on a cotton-pickin' second......

Electrickery generation and distribution efficiencies are somewhere around 25 to 30% depending on where you live in the UK. (They were around 22% when I first started looking some 30 years ago....). The efficiency of a modern condensing boiler is in the 95 to 98% range. You are always better off heating your house via a domestic central heating boiler than by using electric light bulbs, and you always were, in terms of energy consumption.

I reckon your panels will cost you virtually double fluorescents. When the tubes die they are less than £2 each
When you panels die they are f^&*ed and you will be buying new panels.

Those figures will be when the lamp is new and operating at its ideal running temperature. If it is an open batten it will run too cool. As it ages the light output will fall off significantly - it may still work after x 1000 hours but its output may be 50% or less.

Don't think LEDs lose output over time but don't really know. Nearly all our lighting is LED now. Had some failures in the garden with some G4 12V ones I bought from china via ebay but that may be down to running them on AC instead of DC. Apart from that all still working fine indoors.

Oh dear Mike you have been hoodwinked by the SEDBUK test results done under unrealisitc conditions eh?

You might start getting near with a very high spec house like yours but sadly a modern boiler can get no where near when fitted into most houses.

With a bit of luck, as Bob says.

But more importantly ONLY when they are in condensing mode. And condensing mode ceases above about 55 degree C. Which is way below the temperature where most folk run their boilers. So that figure of 95% is a figment of manufacturers imagination in reality.

Then if it's an oil-fired boiler you need to factor in the waste during the pre-purge and post-purge stages of each burn cycle.

I've purchased one of these Roger. Two days from order to delivery, arrived yesterday.

Will fire it up this evening and let you know how it looks. Might do a little video.

Your shop at 30 sqm (i think?) = 30k lumen and your panels are specified at 5000 Lumen each so 6 sounds spot on.

I'm still torn between getting another box of 25 tubes at a quid each which might see me out or trying some of this newfangled lighting :lol:

My rationale for looking at these when Roger shared was the thickness. Almost flush mounted to the ceiling, could even be flush mounted if I can be bothered cutting out the plasterboard, means nothing hanging down to get clattered by turning around sheet goods or long lengths.

I was extremely pleasantly surprised at just how much light that single panel kicks out though for that price.

Computery things suck!
 
I'd suggest trying the panel somewhere you spend a bit of time, to make sure you like the light, before buying the rest.
Sometimes the LED light can be unpleasant after a while.
Also, if it has much blue light in it, it may mess with your sleep if you use it later in the day.
