• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Does any member have experience of making a Mancala board. My daughter wishes to make one.
Thank you,
Russell

I've thought about it, but not done it. It shouldn't be difficult with a router, a templet, a bearing guided cutter and possibly some sort of jig to hold the board. (edit your title?)

I had to look that up. Turns out it is another name for awale. My wife and I made one in oak some time back. She carved out the hollows I added the hinges. When I get back next week I’ll take some pictures.

sunny bob did a solitare board a few years back which would be very similar in terms of the process.

at the time I did a sample with a drill put ground to a round point that worked well in the drill press for the holes.

Here’s the one my missus made. She carved the hollows and the flower on the top.

I made the beads from some plasticine type product which was baked in the oven to go hard.

Good luck with the make, which ever method you chose..

Thank you for your replies. My daughter forwarded a video clip to me which showed a board being made with 1/2 inch core box bit, and with what appeared to be a cardboard pattern to follow. It did stipulate how many times he readjusted the depth to achieve his final result.
I would be very weary of following that route even a small Trend T4.
It did occur to me that the the centre might be hollowed out with a Forstner bit and then finished with a core box bit in Association with a suitable guide bush and template.
A suggestion that it could be carved out did not receive a favourable response from my daughter!

I like the hand carved one much more than the machine made one.

I carved an egg holder in oak and it didn’t take long.

should be reasonably easy to make with just a single gouge and a block of wood, draw out the circles and carve away.
