• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Merry Christmas (presents)

Merry Christmas everyone, whether you like it or not! :D

Santa knows me well and knows my current needs (burned out my previous green one a few months back).

Ive just suggested this as a gamechanger tool. It has to be one of the most versitile tools i own for house maintenance and work.

Cracking little thing, you are a lucky boy.

Yeah they’re bloody brilliant for all kinds of jobs. I’ve had the green Bosch for years but over abused it during lockdown one and chances it arm asking for a replacement. SWIMBO is complaining she didn’t get me many presents though so I could have chances it further for the cordless one despite the price! :D

Five bottles of whisky so far & not a pair of socks or slippers in sight so I’m calling this an excellent Yuletide, should keep me going till Easter

Haha brilliant. No socks or slippers for me either. Couple of bottles of rum, chocolate, Axminster voucher and some other bits.

That's a good present. They are a great tool.

I've knackered two Fein ones and am presently using a Vecturo 110v. I would like a cordless one. But I am pretty sure Santa has not been that nice to me, as Santa thinks I have too many tools.

Best wishes to all.

Adrian

Nadolig Llawen!

I didn't get anything tool related Grumble Grumble... But I did get a voucher for a tool shop (which is arguably better than being bought something random), so I bought something with that, more on that in the New Year!

I got my father a Cordless Dewalt SDS drill, battery and some bits for it, I wi- I mean, He will find it very handy :)

I got 2 tools. 1 is an espresso machine.

The other ia a high resolution digital level.

Im happy with that.

I'm happy for you guys getting the presents you wanted. I didn't get anything. Nor did my hubby. We agreed that this year what we could both really use was a £25 DAB clock radio in the living room so that's all we got. It may have been a frugal Christmas but it's been a really happy one, what with all the feasting, dog walking and piano playing.

We're the same. We've got enough stuff. A new TV last month counts as a retrospective christmas present, and I got some new underpants because they don't last forever, believe it or not. I'm just happy having a nice meal, seeing one daughter here, and one via Skype.

........ooh, not quite so fast! I've just had a book on mediaeval ecclesiastical carving. :eusa-dance:

I have been thinking about a watch to work with my phone for some time. Samsung launched their new range recently which I dont like, so my wife bought me one of the older models for Christmas.
It is a clever bit of kit it comes with two straps unfortunately both are on the small side, so I guess I will be making a longer strap in the coming days. I am thinking Ostrich leg leather.

Besides a mug with some penguins on it (no, no idea either) and an Amazon voucher... I received this handmade hammer from the good Lady Nelsun. She's excelled herself this year as it's been a checked shirt each Christmas for long enough to become almost a tradition. 400mm long and just a smidge over and about 1100g:

It was made by our not-yet-son-in-law who started out on his own about a year ago doing all sorts of fabrication. It looks to be more of a hammer a smithy would use but I'll find out more the next time I see him... whenever that will be. A lovely gift and hopes are high for this time next year - I can prime him with ideas in advance.

A KG of Dark Chocolate slabs (not sure where they purchased as stock has been out since April) and some ZAR's.
My hinting for a band saw was ignored :(

A good woodworking friend sent me the yet to be released Chairpanzee analog computer for working out sight line & drilling angles for chair legs etc.

As I’m hopeless at math this should come in handy in the very near future.

Also confession time I also treated myself, well Tesco said there was no naughty list this year &it isn’t Christmas without some grey & Green.

Half a case of Grenache and a case of Palmers 200.

And a 12 String capo. A 6 bring capo doesn't work on a 12 string because of the different thicknesses in the courses (pairs). They both need to be pressed down behind the fret to the same degree without moving.

And a clock with hands for the workshop!!

Only one workshop related pressy - mainly because I don't really need anything in there ...

A pack of 0.9mm white pencil leads and a pentel clutch pencil to hold them.
With my style of woodworking methods, it is pretty rare that I even need to mark wood but when I do, this will be useful on dark wood as well as my stock of phenolic resin coated ply I use for jigs.

I was genuinely hoping for anew pair of slippers, something my mum’s got me every year forever, but not this year! I will now have to buy my own slippers for the first time ever. Hum. Bug.

I did get lots of nice little things though, including the new cartridge for my turntable that I’d asked santa very nicely for, so I cannot complain!

Nothing for me this year.
I might have to consider building a chimney onto the workshop roof. 8-)

Kind people bought me these

And some of this

And some books (of no interest unless you like speculative fiction (as we are meant to call it these days) or cricket).

And some moe wine.

And some socks. Which I had asked for.

I got a festive tipple. Not sure what my wife is trying to tell me but it tastes ok.

I bought myself a Leatherman Wave a year or two ago on a whim that it might come in handy and I must say it has become an invaluable thing to keep in the pocket, even in a workshop filled with tools it's quite good to be able to quickly pull out a pair of pliers to grip something or a screwdriver to pop the lid off a paint tin without walking across the room to find a screwdriver.

A couple of Incra marking tools which I hope will improve accuracy in marking out but far more importantly a beautifully made marking knife and a couple of dovetail markers. without introducing any cross forum drift they were made by our very own Sheffield Tony and I will treasue them every single time I use them.

Common material running through my tool related presents. The mini vernier I requested more for work than in the workshop. The other two were suprises, particularly the Hovel pencil plane which not only works wonderfully but is a thing of beauty!

My goodness, some of you guys have got some really pretty hand tools.

Now, do you know, that was the one i was dubious about. I didn't ask for it. It's a bit clunky, heavy and, well, inconvenient. Mine (now) is a Surge.

We shall see.

My wife and grandson came across my bottle of Glenmorangie Special Reserve which I think now goes for £170 a bottle.
No idea where I got it but they say it tastes very nice [emoji45]

Nowt for the 'shop as it's stuffed full of stuff. I'm currently after Pfeil carving tools but CHT are currently very low on stock; I'm assured there's a new delivery coming in the New Year. I have put a 12 pocket leather tool roll from Workshop Heaven on my Amazon Wish List though - Rob

Got to admit I was given one a few years ago & I just didn’t see the point, I found it cumbersome & awkward to use, I guess if you haven’t got the tools for a job they are handy, but when you’ve got the right tool for the job why would you opt for a tool that’s basically a compromise.

I’ve got quite a few of these type of knives not for everyday use but useful when away from home for emergency repairs.

The Surge is quite a bit bigger than the Wave, almost twice as large I think which does hamper its "portability" a bit I would imagine. My Wave just slips into one of the holster pockets on my work trousers and it's there with me day-in-day-out.

They're definitely not a replacement for a proper tool for the job but they are very handy in a pinch doing something simple when you don't have the proper tool on-hand. For me (who was also initially a skeptic) it's become an invaluable time-saving tool and I definitely wouldn't be without it now, even something as simple as spotting a staple on a piece of timber before shoving it through the four-cutter is very quickly resolved by pulling it out of my pocket and pulling the staple out with the pliers, all without moving from where I'm standing :)

It's not for making fine furniture with, it's really a tinkerer's tool at heart!

Two workshop-related gifts this year:

I'm quite looking forward to cutting dovetails with something other than a yellow and black builder's chisel whose bevelled edges manage to have 3mm of vertical wall before the bevel starts.
