• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I am in the process of making my will. I have no-one to leave my tools and machines to and wonder if anyone has a suggestion how they could be disposed of. I have heard of Men's Sheds but have no knowledge if they still exist or maybe the yearly auctions that take place?

It's a difficult one, John.
I'm in the same boat, really. No family. In my will I have said that a couple of my woodworking friends can come and take what they want and organise the sale of the rest. But that was easier to do when I lived in the UK, I'm not sure if they will want to travel a thousand km just to pick up a few pieces.

That's a difficult one and something most of us are or will be confronting at some stage. I don't have any practical suggestions to offer.

I have a son and daughter, neither of whom are interested apart from the usual basic maintenance and I've already set them up with tools for that. I have a granddaughter who shows no interest so I'll be in the same boat. What I've done is started a spreadsheet with descriptions including 'photos and a rough price expectation in the hope they will at least avoid being ripped off when the time comes. It's not an easy or quick task though.

All of my hand tools will be left to my grandson, (now only 10 months old) in the expectation that he'll hopefully use them as intended. If not he's free to dispose of them as he sees fit; I won't be around. We have a men's shed here in Wilton but from my few dealings with them, the guys there have very limited experience of tools and equipment and the whole set up to me seems to be a support group where it does an excellent job - Rob

When we contacted our local men's shed they were able to take stuff to send to Ukraine although I hope the war will be long over my the time you pop your clogs.

I think hand tools are falling out of fashion following a fad during the lockdown.
This morning I saw a number 6 and a number 4 Stanley planes for £30 for the pair on Facebook marketplace. They looked in very good condition.

I've told my wife, that if she survives me, what happens to all my tools is her problem not mine. 😉😀 That said, I've a few good friends that will help her even if they say the easiest way to sort them out is to set the shed on fire, (if you'd seen my shed you'd understand where they're coming from.) 🤣🤣

I suspect it will not be a problem for me. No 1 offspring is gradually transferring my tools ostensibly "on loan" to his place and when he gets the country pile he is angling for, he will have plenty of room for the rest. I've taught him through most of his life (he's 27) how to use them. He's an aerospace engineer so more used to programming machine to make launch vehicles than wood planes, but enjoys getting his hands dirty. This is the perfect outcome for me really. He has already got most of the guitars :D(y).

No1 son has no interest in DIY or actually making stuff, but he did enjoy himself a couple of years ago when I showed him how to lay a laminate floor. He too has 'acquired' a couple of power tools which will never make it back to Wilton but he's beginning to realise that when a job needs doing it's either a) the WoD, the Workshop of Dad or b) DIY and if neither are forthcoming it's c) GSI...get someone in. He's earning enough in the City though to pay for a tradesman to fix stuff when needed (like a leaking roof!)

He already has adequate sufficiency of guitars, mostly Gibson Les Paul's and a Fender Strat (plus a couple of others less well known) There's also a vast 100W per channel (I think) Orange amp, used about twice, still in Wilton but he's taken his smaller one to Bromley - Rob
