• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I am making a log shelter for a neighbour which will be clad with 150mm feather edge boards. The boards will be horizontal and my initial thought was to fix it with a nail through the board into each of the uprights of the frame so it will be under the overlap of the board above.

Does this leave a risk of the board curling and is it better to add a second nail as subsequent boards are fitted to go through both … or will that introduce the risk of the boards splitting?

Any advice will be most welcome.

Cheers

I would simply fix in the middle of each board.
This allows it to move either side of the nail.

But you could nail the feather edge tightly and then drill the thick edge slightly oversize to allow for movement??

One nail per board per batten/ stud. If the boards overlap by 25mm, the nails should be about 30mm up from the bottom edge. This means that the bottom of each board is held by the nail, and the top edge of each board is held in by the board above, and yet is free to expand and contract. Nailed like this they won't curl. If you nail them in the middle they will all curl. DON'T use 2 nails, as the boards will split when they contract.

Ex 7" boards are better, as they tend to be thicker than ex 6". Thin boards can split when nailing near the ends. A 7" board gives a 6" coursing, obviously.
