But we did make it to the Rhine and back



Not from here of course but a 32km round trip from the park we stayed at in the Netherlands. The image taking in Emmerich am Rhine, a small Hanseatic town flattened in '45 but rebuilt and very pretty.

Any of you cycling enthusiasts that feel the need for a safe cycling holiday should go to the Netherlands. Not only are there 1000s of miles of dedicated, separated cycle routes but when you do need to cycle through towns and villages there is a palpable feeling that the motorist behind you is quite happy to wait until it is safe to pass. You can feel a total lack of aggression and impatience to get passed.

This was, I think, our 6th holiday in the Netherlands staying with the same group but in different parks each time. Landal Greenparks have parks for kids with swimming pools and activities or some geared for the older generations. I can wholeheartedly recommend and can give further details if required.

Any trip to the Netherlands would not be complete without a windmill. This one, in Zeddam, just happens to be the oldest in the country.

Sounds great.

I just spent the last 7 years making sure the new cycle infrastructure in Devon was as safe as possible, learning what we could from our European and Scandinavian neighbours.

But you can't change a driving culture overnight!
