• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

is Alcool a Bruler 90° the same as Meths? Can it be used in lieu of meths?

Neither the colour nor the smell are the same as what I remember using on my model railway years ago but I am aware that the smell and colour may be additives.
 
Hi Andy,

Googling alcool a bruler says that the translation is methylated spirits. The wikipedia entry, in French, says that it's ethanol with methanol added i.e. Denatured alchohol or meths. In the UK they also add blue colouring but I think other countries may use a diffrent colour.

Added info: i've just spoken to my son-in-law who works in a boatyard here in France and he confirms it is meths and in France it may be either clear or coloured a light mauve.
 
Martin thanks for the reply. I had used the standard translate tools but when I smelt the stuff it threw me somewhat.
Were/are you doing some house renovations in France Comte? How is it going?
 
I understand why meths was coloured in the UK to deter alcoholics. I wonder why the French choose not too. Maybe cheap alcohol, in the form of wine, was or is so readily available there is no demand for a cheaper alternative.

I think that the reason that meths in coloured, at least in the UK, is to deter anyone from trying to sample it as the methanol can do you some harm. Maybe the French, with their carefree attitude to health and safety, don't think it's worth bothering.

With regard to your question about my being in the Franche Comte, that's true, we're here at the moment, returning to the UK next Monday. I am, indeed, trying to restore our side of the house here but, when I started to list what we have been doing, I thought it might bore readers. However, if forum members want to hear what I've been up to, then I'll write it up although there are very few pictures of WIP.

It is always nice to see what others are up to Martin, how they approach things and their methods used. Even more interesting to compare the different techniques and approach used overseas too.
Photos of course help but not always necessary.
