• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. I've got a collection of VHS tapes (which I want to get rid of), Hi8 Camcorder Videos and MiniDV videos.

We've given all the VHS films away but I've still got a few with family stuff on them which I am transferring to my Computer using an "Elgato Video Capture". So so far so good.
But the real problem has been digitising the original footage from Hi8 and MiniDV camcorder tapes, as I've found to my dismay that my old cameras no longer work properly!
Years ago I'd digitised the analogue Hi8 stuff by recording it through the MiniDV camcorder, editing it and making DVDs but the quality suffered a bit.
The DVDs from the MiniDV are OK but they are edited versions.

What I really want to do is to digitise the entire contents of the tapes (warts and all) before they get completely unreadable.
Looking at S/H prices of gear it looks like other folks are in the same predicament going by the prices - £300 to £500 for a Hi8 deck and £150 for an old MiniDV camcorder!
My son in law has an old Panasonic so perhaps that will still work?

So my message is if you have similar "precious" material, films, whatever, get them copied before it's too late.

I video captured all of our family VHS , VHS-C (?) and miniDV tapes about 10 years ago now. The files are all on my server and so easy to watch on the TV they do actually get viewed at times. Something that rarely happened when you had to find the tape and the right thing to play it.

Our DV camcorder played back OK but would not record so having played the tapes it went in the bin. never used Hi-8. Good luck getting the rest saved.
