• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

hi all

last year I produced some relief plaques cut from a single piece of lime, while i ws away at a show I was asked to do some as commissions based on the clients photograph. here are a couple I did for a client in germany.
I posted these on another forum and was asked for a "how to do" write up which I did but as its quite extensive I emailed it to the people who asked for it.

Really excellent work Martyn.

Having had all my artisitic genes surgically removed in order to be come an engineer :lol: I don't have the first clue on how to do anything like this.

Incidentally I've edited your first post in this thread to show the difference in presentation when you use "place inline" command. I've just done the first two pictures so you can see the difference in results and as well if you press the edit button, you can see how the text is displayed during message composition when you use the feature.

Wow indeed. I'd have to guess the fur is carved, but by hand or machine?

The fur is done with a technique I developed for the first commission I did which was a Timberwolf it was done as a plaque for someone who trades under the name of Timberwolf turning
Basically it is done using a dreamer with a flexishaft fitted with a grinding wheel and then using it like a pencil to shade along the surface of the wood, it’s a bit difficult to describe but I must admit it’s pretty effective and looks better in real life than the photos.
The Maudi project was also the first time I needed really white wood for parts of it and I used a 2 part wood bleach.
If any one wants the full how to write up pm me an email and I will send the file through, as I think it runs to about 10 pages

In there you should be able to find Martyns write up on how he does these relief panels.

The link to the drop box is at the top right of every forum page.

Please can someone confirm that you can see this OK. As drop box owner I get a different view and I want to make sure it has been shared properly.

Thanks for that it seems to look fine, I could never get the hang of all these things, but it saved me a few emails i'm sure

People on this forum keep going on about loss of artistic genes, but I wouldn't consider myself that artistic, so i'm sure you can all do things like this, I'm a retired drilling engineer who was trained as a mining engineer originally, so all get out there and keep trying, read the instructions and then trace off a photo for your pattern, dont worry if the first one is rubbish learn by the mistakes, notice i'm not posting photos of my first try at this segmentation style of working, (i deleted the photos of the first one i did so no requests for these and the first one has gone up in smoke now!)

I can access this ok. My only observation is that the Dropbox doesn't open in another tab.

The subject document is really interesting.

I too have the engineers lack of artistry but I'm thinking something may be possible with photo editing to get to the start line.

Just wondering... you say commissioned for this piece... If this was for monetary reward (I don't want to know how much) do you get enough to cover your time spent making or is it hobby rates?

I'm using Safari on a Mac. Right click gives me the option to open in a new tab, but e.g. if we left click on a url in a post, it automatically opens a new tab.

No big deal.
 
Hi Robert,
Really I suppose it’s hobbies rates, at the moment anyway as I do only a few of them but really if you were organised and sold enough I think you could just about make it pay. I haven’t got a big workshop space so I’m buying in the blank as a start whereas if I had a decent sized bandsaw and planer I could reduce the wood price considerably as well I could set up better sanding and staining set ups than I currently have.
All in all it takes about a day and a half’s work spread over a week(time out for drying times and with me plenty of coffee breaks) but I’m sure I could shorten that but I am a bit of a perfectionist when shaping and finishing so I often go back over bits.
I have done some much simpler ones and I can do two in a day sometimes.
Not really in it to make a living though as I’m retired and just using it to fill my time and push myself to see how good I can get at it.
