There is a place in Switzerland near where I lived (and will retire to perhaps one day) that does a similar thing for piano tonewoods, using timber sourced in the Swiss and Italian Alps. If I can find it, there is a video in Sw. German dialect showing this on a small commercial scale and they use a machine to do the splitting, then they make planks which are joined to make very fine piano soundboards. Maybe guitar tops too for all I know. The place is very unassuming, but they supply Fazioli among others.
