• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Teething troubles, can anyone explain this?

Finally I am using my new SCM Minimax 26 combination machine for the first time in full at it mode, the extractor is pulling well, I certainly wouldn’t like to put my hand over the open 4” nozzle for too long so I’m guessing it’s doing it’s job properly and the pipe run is only 8 feet.
The extractor nozzle on the machine is a 5” dia, and the closest hose over here is a 4” but I have a nicely tapered duct joint.
The surface planer is working beautifully with the Tersa blades and leaves a wonderful finish as expected, there is a scoop underneath which funnels the shavings into the extractor hose and at its end where it joins the hose are these strange bits sticking up, almost as if they were designed to catch the shavings and cause a blockage, no surprise Sherlock that’s exactly what happens!
The questions are, 1 what is the purpose of the blockage inducers and 2 shall I remove the protruding bits?

If it was on the extractor I would suggest that it was to stop larger pieces or cloth from getting to the impeller, but as it's on the machine it's probably to stop someone putting their hand in there. My Draper extractor had something similar and would block often, but it was integral to the case so I took a pair of tin snips to it, and it never blocked again.

I would drill out the rivets and remove them, you probably have enough brain cells to stop yourself from putting your hand in there when its running!

My cyclone thing from Axi had these as well, intended to stop you putting your hand in (why would you). Quickly removed for same reason as you.

My money would be on blocking hands as well, with the same suggested solution.

They are to discourage you from sticking your hand in to remove shavings whilst the machine is operating. They're probably add-ons fitted for markets where H&S legislation calls for such stupidity.
Shall you remove them?
Probably
Brian
