The Tapestry

Along with thousands of others, we've decided on an excursion to the BM in the New Year to see the Bayeux Tapestry and to that end, SWIMBO ordered a little light reading:





...to prepare ourselves for the occasion. We've been to several of these prominent events at both the BM and the V&A; the Faberge exhibition was way beyond stunning! We usually always buy a book of some description and the one that the postie has just delivered is the deluxe edition; the lhs has detailed information about the events taking place in each panel whilst the rhs has general, very 'in depth' stuff as well as plenty of large scale illustrations.
We last saw the tapestry with our two small children approx 35 years ago on a holiday to Normandy and called into Bayeux Cathedral to see it. As I recollect, we almost had the place to ourselves with very few visitors; I suspect it'll be different in the New Year but I'm really looking forward to seeing it again, crowds notwithstanding - Rob

Not sure how it got to 'la belle France' but it's generally agreed that it was embroidered in the area around Canterbury - Rob

I'm horrified at the ticket prices to see it at the BM. Was 12 euro last time we went it in Bayeux.

I remember it in Bayeaux. Also remember it being underwhelming by comparison with the secret underground resistance and WW1 centre not far away.

I wouldn't want to be thought of as a pedant, but it's an embroidery, not a tapestry.

If you like tapestries then I’d recommend Hardwick hall, the place is full of them with over 100 including Gideon tapestries plus some very nice woodwork.

We went last Wednesday following an elderly couple as we mooched around the house, as we exited the house I heard the chap say to his wife “well if I never see another tapestry for the rest of my life it’ll be too soon” clear he wasn’t as impressed as the good lady wife & I.

We visit Hardwick annually for a day out. I think I can relate to the old chap though. The mill at the bottom of the hill is worth a visit too

That's been mentioned many times on the media Mike and it is a piece of embroidery, but it's the given name that people know - Rob
