Mike, IIRC, Mark was trying to get as much working headroom inside the workshop without having to take the eaves up higher than XX, hence the subterranean floor level.

I went and re-measured the other evening and Mike was right (how did I ever doubt him… :eusa-doh: ) so I stopped all the silliness and went back to basics. Even with bringing the slab level to 50mm above ground I will still have over 2.5m at the eaves and 3.5m+ and the ridge, so I'll just have to live with that… :eusa-whistle:

I think I was just being paranoid about making sure I don't regret doing something silly, but it will be fine.

For me, the critical dimension is 2730mm somewhere in the building as this allows you to swing a metric 8 x 4 sheet round vertically.

I set this as a requirement for my shop and then forgot about the thickness of the wooden floor and the ceiling panels but it is near enough and I can get by- just.

Thanks for that.

Outside chance of May build, but more likely August/September. My builder can possibly do May before he goes back to Poland for the summer, but that also depends on how much cash I can free up for him to do, and how much I need to do myself to keep costs down.

Realistically, we're probably talking the latter with me using summer to do the groundworks and lower courses with another builder mate who will help me for beer and BBQ's, then have my Polish chappie whizz the bricks up later on.

Hoping to do the roof myself to as previously mentioned so once I have this lower section sorted I will hopefully (assuming the offer still stands) take Mike up on his kind offer to spec up the roof for me…

Well I look forward to late spring / summer groundworks! Also sounds like you have a good shot at having walls and a roof before the weather gets grim, which has got to be good.

Hopefully! All being well I could potentially get the roof timbers cut in advance and ready to put up as soon as the brickwork is finished assuming I can impress on he builder the importance if accuracy... He is very good though so that would probably be possible, but of course I will take that under advisement from this forum before doing anything...

One more question on this if I may. If I plan to lay the under ground parts myself (albeit with some assistance), is there any reason why I couldn't or shouldn't use a course of 300mm wide trench blocks as my second course (on top of the initial brick course? Just thinking it might be easier, quicker and cheaper for me, but would only do it if it's a structurally sound thing to do…

Okay guys, seems I now have a plan for underground and up to DPC level.

I will now adjust my other diagram to take these changes into account and then work out my numbers of bricks, blocks etc for my BOM.

I know people like to know a coatings exercise so I'll tart another thread containing this info to keep a record of build costs.
