• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I have a (very old) yellow perform DE that I use primarily for hoovering up sawdust/chippings/spiders/gunk around the workshop. It has a 62mm hose on it of about 5ft, then I have taped on an old flexible hose from an old standard hoover to give me another 5ft of reach - in this way I can get to most areas of the workshop to have a clean up every so often. I don't connect it to power tools and this is not an important function currently but is something I am open to. I have a twin motored Camvac for the TS and bandsaw.

The perform is now slowly dying - hose connector has split, it billows out dust from the top when I turn it on (rather negating the purpose of turning it on in the first place!) and I don't have spare paper filters left. So I need to replace it - I like the size of the drum and the volume it holds, but more 'suck' is always valuable. So should I be looking for a workshop vac such as a Record DX1000, or a bog standard compact hoover such as a Henry or similar? A standard household vacuum is out for practical reasons, they hold nothing in terms of volume. I don't need wet/dry, and the biggest things I tend to hoover up are from paint stripping doors and shavings from the router table, but the bulk of the mess will be general sawdust - I am rather lax at minimising this  I don't want to spend a fortune on something, but it does need to function appropriately as a general vacuum. It must also be portable so nothing that fixes to a wall or sit's in a sound proof cupboard.

Comparing specs on DE's is a nightmare, so open to suggestions from those who have something that works in a similar manner. Current front runner is probably the record DX1000 for the volume rather than a Henry type, which has a limited capacity. Many thanks!

I use this Einhell vacuum for that sort of work - not quite as much capacity (30L) as the DX1000, but more portable with the built-in wheels. It was a bit cheaper than the current price when I bought it, though - I got it for £67, and it performs well for that price, dealing with sawdust and shavings on the floor, under the bench and so on, as well as light extraction duties with the mitre saw and router table. There are a number of suspiciously similar models from other brands too, probably from the same factory.

The only times I've really run up against its limits is with the 35mm hose after working large amounts of pine - being so soft, I set the planes for a heavier cut and produce long, wide, thick shavings that do clog the smaller hose. That said, they're also big enough to collect up by hand into the composting bin, so it's not much of a bother in practice, and it deals just fine with the thinner ones from harder woods. On the other hand, that smaller hose is much easier for getting into corners and under things, so I don't think I'd change it if I could for general clean-up work.

I have a 100mm rigid ducting system along one wall for my 4 fixed machines, each with its own blast gate. In that 100 mm I also have a blast gate that connects to a 5 metre x 75 mm hose.
Whenever I finish a messy job I just vacuum the whole workshop (3m x 5 m) and floor with the flexible hose. Sometimes thats 3 times a day, but it only takes a couple of minutes each time and keeps sawdust on the feet and around the house to a bare minimum.

Thanks All, knew I would get sensible advice from here :)

Bob - no, I need the portability of a stand along system I can wheel around. An additional blast gate on the camvac is not really an option unfortunately.

spb - thanks for the link, a bit of exploring from there came up with this 38l one with power take off:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vacmaster-Powe ... 0PAYA?th=1

we could well have a winner here, touch more expensive than the Record but free delivery with Amazon prime so balances out (almost!).

I had for years a LIdil shop vac....Stainless drum and the facility of pluging in the touter or other tool and it would turn the vac on when starting the tool......
eventually it died and I bought the Karcher A2554......
doesnt' have the machine start facility......that I miss a lot.....
but the price was right, it was as new with a clogged filter and big lumps of heavy paper stuck in the hose....lol...
would I buy another...yes .....and it's made better than their power washers....
think the new Lidil is under £50......
