• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

wadkin RU lathe restoration

Wallice

like u spent many a fine hour cleaning up threads and bed spanner marks from old bolts....
even at times blobing elec weld on the bad bits and reshaping......
even had a few nuts n bolts with hand made threads from years past.....
should have kept them and used newer bolts.....
trying to build a small museum of odd bits....hahaha.......

looking forward to getting my stuff repainted.....all because of YOU.....lol....

keep it coming.....

Clogs I'm pleased I've inspired some one to save this old junk. I could never in a million years afford the stuff I have as modern machines,

Time to drag the bed in, I've been dreading this but it went really smoothly

My roof timbers are reclaimed old growth ones, I cant imagine modern ones taking the weights I put on them.

I smeared the bed in waxoyle when I got it a couple of years ago and it has done a great job of protecting it.

It really is huge!
Ideal for turning pens [emoji23]

I did use my rs10 which is 6' between centres to do a batch of 200 pens to raise funds to save a building in my town. :D

A bit more done, it was fun trying to rotate the bed. I really didn't want it to slip and put a big shock load on the joist.

When you put the locking pin in the spindle to remove a faceplate it pushes against a plunger which stops the lathe being started. That wouldn't be good with a geared head, I've done it on the RS but that is flat belt so no damage. This part of the lockout bit, I quite like the rough casting finish but this has been dinged afew times.

It was a monumental day recently, this machine has been in the way for a long time. It was fun getting it out. It weighs about 1.4 tonne.

It took 3hrs to get it ready for collection.

On a different note, I took me lady for a day out, I think I've found my next lathe. I think its maybe a lathe for loco wheels, I'm not sure.

The brass was a bit dinged up so I gave it a skim

I've been removing masking tape and assembling bits all week. On some bits the tape had left its adhesive on the metal, was a right pain to remove even with thinners. I've not had this problem with frog tape before.

I went over the surfaces with oil stone to remove any dings on the ways. every machined surface has been hand scraped when it was built.

This was what had been used to lock the tool rest. I have a proper lever but it needs drilling and tapping for 3/4".

It looked big all the way through. Now it looks massive! I assume those are full 8x4 sheets as your flooring?
Really brings home the size of it - and the size of the task you have accomplished. One Wow doesn't really cover it :)

Wonderful job! Just curious what will the new owner use it for?

I will be the be the new user, I thought I would do some pens. :D I did think about making some columns to recreate the portico that the wadkin factory once had. I have the big oak front doors and plan on putting them on my shed.
I've always fancied trying a big hollow form turning.

When the time comes you must show us some pics of it in use, please.

Andy, are you really sure that Wallace actually uses those machines other than to help restore more machinery?

Bob

I built a kitchen about 3 years ago :D This was my last machine on my bucket list so I will be having a good clear out of junk and maybe do some woodwork, maybe.

A wondrous thing ( oh for a workshop the size of a hanger) any chance of a pic with the bed wound out when you get an opportunity, also a gallery of your wadkin collection and the factory doors. Good job well done.

Once I get sorted and the RU levelled up and bolted down I can wind the bed out.
Heres a pic of the portico at wadkin, I had a chance of buying the columns but thought better of it.

And the doors which date from 1922, I can just say lift one end up.

Cheers , at least you saved some of the original and have the opportunity to recreate the rest, Wadkin had a proper workman like entry very fitting. The facade instantly reminded me of the hoover building for some odd reason, no idea why.

Art Deco?

Oh my word, - that's not gonna fit in my shed!

Lovely work as always Wallace. I do enjoy your restoration threads.

Next one please!

I'm done, the reason I started doing them was a cheap way of getting great machines for nearly scrap money. Then I did some to pay for the machines I wanted. But I now have all the machines I could ever want. I promised the Mrs two years ago I would get rid of the scrap yard which has accumulated over the last ten years and reclaim what was once a lovely bit of garden.
There's 7 machines out there and one I bought on a whim that is in someones outbuilding. I forgot the guys details. I hope he still has it.

Looking through a 1925 Sagar catalogue for something else last night, I stumbled across this.

Sagar.pngSame theme (moving bed) but not half as nice as the Wadkin RU.

Cheers, Vann.
